¡Vamos Omar!

DEBATE 253 (Pt. 2)
To refresh you on the last post, I think the Tigers should make JaCoby Jones the utility man and use Reyes like the tigers used Machado last year. In the “Dixon Machado Role,” Reyes won’t have any pressure or stress. All he will need to do is learn the MLB culture, customs, study the MLB pitchers, and learn as much as he can from the coaches and players. He may rarely play, but he will garner lots of confidence and experience. Those two things may lead him to make the best of his opportunities. Like Machado, he may get the chance to break out. Machado capitalized greatly on his opportunity last year and gave the tigers enough confidence to trade their all-star second baseman and let him start this year. So, in conclusion, I say the tigers send Jones to Toledo to get used to the infield again. Then call him up when he’s ready and make him the utility man. Second, I say the tigers should now use Victor Reyes like they used Machado last year. He can get lots of experience and new wisdom while not getting stressed or pressured to play everyday. In layman’s terms, Jones should become the utility man and Reyes should be the tigers fourth outfielder.

DEBATE 153 (Pt. 1)
In the first round and first pick of the 2017 Rule 5 draft, the Detroit Tigers selected Victor Reyes of the Arizona Dbacks. He was the Dbacks #18 prospect. However, he hit very well in AA this year. He hit .292 with 18 stolen bases and just 80 strikeouts in 479 at bats. He’s a contact hitter that doesn’t strike out all too much. He can also play above average defense at all 3 outfield positions.
The question is... was this a good pick and what will be his role with the tigers in 2018?
MY OPINION
While this wasn’t a pick I was necessarily expecting, I think it could be good. There’s no question that Reyes is a good hitter. While he doesn’t posses much power, he doesn’t necessarily need it. If you can constantly hit and not strike out, you can have a good career in the MLB. Especially when you add in his solid defense. However, he’s never played in a game above AA, so it will be a big transition to the MLB. Because of Rule 5 rules, he must spend the entire 2018 season on the tigers 25 man roster or else the tigers have to offer him back to the Dbacks. Being a 23 year old prospect, the Dbacks will probably take him. Therefore, he needs to stay on the 25 man roster in 2018. And I’ve got the solution. Reyes will act as the tigers fourth outfielder next season. However, you may be saying, “wtf tigersdebate we have 5 outfielders!” We do, but if you don’t recall, we ditched our utility man Romine. The Tigers don’t have a guy who can play both infield and outfield... oh wait, they do! JaCoby Jones went through the minor leagues playing Shortstop, Third Base, and all outfield positions. My proposal is that Jones should take over Romine’s abandoned role. He may have to start the year in AAA to get a refresher on those positions, but when he starts to hit and figure them out again, he can become the new utility man. This allows Reyes to go into the “Dixon Machado role” in 2018.
