Born in 1586 in Lima, Peru, and baptized as Isabel Flores, she was popularly known as Rosa for her extraordinary beauty. She made a vow of virginity at an early age and only with great difficulty overcame the objections and misunderstandings of her family to her way of life.
.
At the age of twenty, she joined the Third Order of St Dominic (now called the Dominican Laity) and lived in a hermitage she had set up in her family's garden. She practiced severe penances for the salvation of sinners ad for the missionary efforts of the Church in the Indies.
.
She had a special devotion to Christ in the Eucharist and to Mary. Her desire to teach others the secret of prayer made her a zealous promoter of the Rosary. She died at Lima on August 24, 1617 and became the first canonized saint of South America and the western hemisphere.
.
► PRAYER | O God, for love of you our sister Rose gave up everything to devote herself to a life of penance. By the help of her prayers may we imitate her selfless way of life on earth and enjoy the fullness of your blessings in heaven. Grant this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Like the Dogma of the Assumption, the feast of the Queenship of the Virgin Mary is a relatively recent institution by Pope Pius XII, but it has been part of our faith since the early years of the Church.
.
The liturgical memorial of the Virgin Mary's queenship was established during the Marian year of 1954, originally on May 31. After the reforms of Vatican II, it was transferred to August 22, eight (8) days after the solemnity of the Assumption.
.
In the twelfth chapter of the Book of Revelation, Mary is described as the woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and with a crown of twelve (12) stars.
.
Today, we invoke Mary as our Queen. This celebration is not meant to deify her, or to put her beside or above the glory and majesty of God. Rather, we celebrate God's graciousness, for in His great love and mercy for man, He has given us Mary, in whose worthy and immaculate womb the salvation of the world took flesh.
.
As dutiful subjects of our Lord's mother, we rush to her feet and place ourselves under the mantle of her protection. The venerable Pope Pius XII exhorts all of us: "Let all Christians, therefore, glory in being subjects of the Virgin Mother of God, who, while wielding royal power, is on fire with a mother's love."
.
Mother Mary, Queen of heaven and earth, pray for us!

St Hyacinth was born near Wroclaw (Breslau), Poland, towards the end of the twelfth century. He was a canon of the Krakow cathedral when, on a journey to Rome in 1220, he was attracted to the Order of Preachers by the holiness and preaching of St Dominic, who received him into the Order.
.
In 1221, he was sent back to Poland to establish the Order where he is venerated as an apostle and great preacher. He is known to have preached and established priories at Gdansk and at Kiel, at a time when the Tartar invasions were at their height. Through all these, St Hyacinth maintained a reputation of gentleness, humility, and courtesy.
.
In the Order he is known for his tender devotion to the Mother of God. He died in Krakow on August 15, 1257.
.
► PRAYER | Loving God, you gave St Hyacinth the grace to preach, that he might draw the peoples of many nations to the light of truth. By your power bring forth good works in our lives, that all may be moved to give you glory. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

ASCENSION VS. ASSUMPTION

The main difference between ascension and assumption is that Jesus ascended into the kingdom of Heaven by His own power while Mary's assumption depended on the power of God. The Church, from the very beginning, has professed the Divinity of our Lord Jesus and His oneness with the Father and the Holy Spirit.

Mary was only assumed into heaven, that is to say, not by her own power (because she is not divine, and the Church has never taught that she is), but by the power of her Divine Son Jesus.

Although the dogma of the Assumption was definitively proclaimed only in 1950, this belief has been upheld by the Church as early as the fifth century. We know that the Virgin Mary, at the end of her earthly life, was taken up into heaven by the power of God, because this account has been handed down to us by the Apostles and their successors. The assumption of Mary is part of the Sacred Tradition of the Church, which, along with Sacred Scripture, make up the complete Deposit of Faith.

Her presence in heaven is further confirmed by the twelfth chapter of the Book of Revelation: "A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head." #LayDominicansPH #DominicansPH #OrderOfPreachers #FraternitiesOP #Catholic #Christian #Church #Gospel #Sunday #Ascension #Assumption #Jesus #Mary #Catechism #Faith #Tradition #Scripture
