We remember Charles "Jay" Ross who died in the line of duty 31 years ago today, on August 12, 1988.
Charles “Jay” Ross got his start working with CDF and was later hired by the City of Placerville, where he spent the rest of his fire service career – as a firefighter, engineer, captain and training and safety officer. He had a great love for hunting, camping and four-wheeling every summer. He was diagnosed with job-related tuberculosis and encephalitis, an infection of the brain and lungs, which was his cause of death.

He is remembered on the California Firefighters Memorial in Sacramento.
The City of Placerville Fire Department is now the El Dorado County Fire Protection District.

Happy Birthday Smokey Bear!

Smokey Bear was born on Aug. 9, 1944, when the U.S. Forest Service and the Ad Council agreed that a fictional bear would be the symbol for their joint effort to promote forest fire prevention.
Artist Albert Staehle was asked to paint the first poster of Smokey Bear. It depicted a bear pouring a bucket of water on a campfire and saying “Care will prevent 9 out of 10 fires.” Smokey Bear soon became very popular as his image appeared on a variety of forest fire prevention materials. In 1947, his slogan became the familiar “Only YOU Can Prevent Forest Fires!” #SmokeyBear #onlyyou #usforestservice #firefighter #firestation @u.s.forestservice #ElDoradoNationalForest
Firefighters from Station 72, Station 28 and Station 21 practiced a rural water supply drill today. This procedure is necessary in areas that do not have fire hydrants readily available.

Station 28 “C” crews perform a monthly check on our Red Hawk Utility Vehicle. This small but helpful piece of apparatus is stored at the Red Hawk Casino parking garage. It is equipped with a 100 gallon water tank and 65 GPM pump to assist crews in extinguishing vehicle fires within the parking structure. #firefighter #smallbutmighty #redhawkcasino

Another day of training for our new recruits! Our firefighters have to practice these skills using our equipment so they are ready, day one, to respond to a fire. Since most of our fire engines only have 2 personnel, these firefighters will be relied on to get the job done.

Great effort during their training, which would not be possible without the dedication of several of our Captains and Firefighters who are providing this valuable training. #teamwork #firefighter #firetraining #firedepartment #dedication #investinthefuture @ecffirefighters - #regrann
