GOVERNMENT has removed duty on sanitary pads, a move likely to be welcomed by women as the price of basic toiletries is now beyond the reach of many. Gender activists and legislators have over the years pleaded with Government for duty free and subsidised sanitary pads to no avail.
Speaking during yesterday's pre-budget seminar in Bulawayo, Finance and Economic Development Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube said it was a "done deal" and he would announce it in the forthcoming 2019 budget statement. "The cost of sanitary pads and removing duty on it , consider it done. We will have something on the budget on this issue of sanitary pads .Consider it done; there is no debate," said Prof Ncube.

"Girl power in my mind is to let girls be exactly what they are. Let them be angry. Let them be resentful. And rebellious. Let them be hard and soft and loving and sad and silly. Let them be wrong. Let them be right. Let them be everything, because they are everything." Amy Sherman-Palladino #yamawomen #yamaconversations #pressforprogress #womenhistorymonth

Mental ill health among young women and girls . . .

Three quarters (75%) of mental health issues are established before the age of 24, and young women have emerged as the highest-risk group for mental ill health: . . . •A quarter of young women (25.7%) have self-harmed – more than twice the rate for young men. There is evidence this could be higher and is growing.*
•26% of young women experience a Common Mental Disorder, such as anxiety or depression – almost three times more than young men.
•1 in 7 young women (16-24) have PTSD (compared with 3.6% of young men).
•72% of those in suicide counselling with NSPCC are girls
•Suicide is the third most common reason for girls to contact Childline, and the fifth most common for boys

There is not sufficient knowledge on the causes of #breastcancer, therefore, early detection of the disease remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control. When breast cancer is detected early, and if adequate #diagnosis and #treatment are available, there is a good chance that breast cancer can be cured. If detected late, however, curative treatment is often no longer an option. In such cases, palliative care to relief the suffering of patients and their families is needed.

There’s no special technique to check your breasts. Everyone’s breasts are different, so get to know how your breasts normally look and feel. That way, it’s easier to spot anything unusual. Check the whole breast area, including your upper chest and armpits. If you spot any changes to your breasts, make sure you get checked by your doctor as soon as possible.

Signs to look out for:- Lumps: This can be the first symptom of breast cancer, a lump might not be seen but it may be felt.

Changes in size or shape: For example, one breast might become larger or lower than the other.
Change in skin texture: This might be puckering or dimpling of the skin of the breast.
Change in colour: The breast may look red or inflamed.

Nipples look different: For example, one of them might become inverted (turned in) when it normally points out.

Unusual discharge: Unusual discharge from your nipples is a concern

Rash or crusting: Rash or crusting of the nipple or surrounding area.

If you see anything unusual, please check with your doctor!

The third term of school is very crucial because this is the time we have the final examinations. Students can’t afford to miss class for whatever reasons, especially because of the lack of sanitary pads. We should assist those that can’t afford in order to retain them in class and boost their confidence during the examination period. It’s only through education that real empowerment can occur. .

A strong feeling of hunger a few days before or during menstruation is a normal phenomenon for many women. It can be explained by a change in hormonal levels. There are two hormones that influence appetite:leptin (the higher it’s level the taste you feel full) and ghrelin (when it’s even goes up so does your appetite).
.
The level of the latter is affected by sleep quality. If you don’t get enough sleep ( especially in the second phase of the cycle) the gherlin rises and the craving for food is more intense than it usually is. Appetite also depends on insulin and cortisol (stress hormone) and even on sex hormones. .
A decreased estrogen level before menstruation can raise the level of ghrelin and low estradiol makes your mood go down. As a result your body asks for food because it is a way of increasing the amount of endorphins (happiness hormones). Don’t worry much about your elevated hunger. This is only a temporary physiological state. #yamawomen #yamaconversations #pressforprogress #womenhistorymonth

Bottled water with unbroken seals and canned/bottled carbonated beverages are safe to drink and use.
Use safe water to brush your teeth, wash and prepare food, and to make ice.
Clean food preparation areas and kitchenware with soap and safe water and let dry completely before reuse.
To be sure water is safe to drink and use:

Boil it or treat it with a chlorine product or household bleach.
If boiling, bring your water to a complete boil for at least 1 minute.
To treat your water with chlorine, use one of the locally available treatment products and follow the instructions. #yamawomen #yamaconversations #pressforprogress #womenhistorymonth
