White Rhinos Are Thriving Thanks To Conservation Efforts Just Like This 🦏❤ White rhinos, once endangered with only about 200 in existence, are now thriving with over 20,000 throughout the world thanks to conservation efforts like this one — which means more adorable babies like these two, running, playing, and exploring their surroundings.

The rhino calves were born to mothers Zenzele and Mustang Sally, along with father Roscoe, just three days apart in mid-November and were the very first to be born in The Wilds’ new rhinoceros barn. Mom Zenzele’s own birth was historic as well as she was the first rhino calf born in The Wilds back in 2004, mothering four calves since then.

The Wilds staff has been monitoring the calves,  the 18th and 19th white rhinos born at The Wilds and both appear to be doing very well under their mothers’ care. However, even with the increase in numbers, the species remains classified as near threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). http://cbsloc.al/2iCVA5s

What an absolutely wonderful evening at the book launch for the much anticipated Remembering Rhinos at the National Geographical Society in London last Wednesday.

Huge congratulations to @margotraggettphotography for her tireless work to bring the book through conception to publication and all the wonderful contributions from the photographers.

For months we have been caught in a futile debate about how to best move forward to save these iconic, environmentally important and irreplacable species. I hope the launch becomes a catalyst to banish the rhino fatigue and turn apathy into action.

Over £100,000 has been raised thus far for #rhino conservation, but we can still do so much more. If you haven't already brought the book please copy and paste this url and grab yourself a copy. 100% of sales go directly to saving rhinos: https://www.buyrememberingbooks.com/product-page/remembering-rhinos-standard-edition

Good luck to everyone attending #GMFER2017 events today and the coming week as we internationally unite to march, demonstrate, lobby and publicly challenge our governments to turn the tide of the environmental, humanitarian, economic, but ultimately political crisis driving our magnificent elephants and rhinos closer to extinction.

In November 2012, the U.S. State Department held an unprecedented event on illegal wildlife trafficking and conservation. The then Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton called for an end to illicit wildlife trafficking emphasising "This is a global challenge that spans continents and crosses oceans, and we need to address it with partnerships that are as robust and far-reaching as the criminal networks we seek to dismantle"

Today, thousands of supporters will join together in more than 140 countries. Just like previous years we will join together and watch the small ripples of awareness we created become huge waves of change in an ocean of apathy, inaction and political disregard for our planet's iconic wildlife. Our collective, far reaching voices will span the continents and cross the oceans as we become the catalysts for change.

Today, we won't just aspire to make a difference, we will aspire to be the difference. We will encourage, persuade and ultimately influence the decisions which will pave the way for the conservation and preservation of the world's most iconic, ecologically important and irreplacable species and we will only succeed together as one united voice.

Your voice matters. Make it count. 🦏🐘🦁 PHOTO CREDIT: Global March For Elephants & Rhinos (& the organisers and attendees of previous annual events)

Youth isn't always wasted on the young and the children who want to save rhinos today WILL BECOME the adults who take action tomorrow.

Earlier this year, with the help of an inspirational South African teacher working in Asia, young Tiawanese students united in a drive to raise awareness of the rhino poaching crisis producing some amazing artwork and heartfelt messages ❤🦏👊 Your children can join our rhino education project ran in partnership with @savingthesurvivors by visiting our website and clicking the "education" tab. You'll find tons of FREE activities, fact sheets, infographics, downloads and much more rhinotastic stuff!

Few regions in the world have such rich and diverse exploitable game resources as South Africa and historically rhinos have been a huge source of income for the country. The greatest betrayal to rhinos, however has not been caused by those who inflict suffering, but by those who place perceived value of a horn above the true value of the animal. There’s an old saying, “A fake friend can cause more damage than the real enemy” and that resonates true when it comes to trading rhino horns.

The moratorium has been a victim of ineffective and inadequate governance compounded by bad press which has focussed on the failure of the ban, but not the government’s failure to effectively enforce it (Remember, rumours are spread by haters, carried by fools and accepted by idiots). Incredibly a minority of private rhino owners endorsing trade conveniently ignore the governments non-performance because both share the same vision of commodification claiming trade is a constitutional right. Ironic considering the South African government are in breach of their own constitution, biodiversity act (NEMBA) and CITES international treaty to put forward the proposal to domestically trade.

While the Minister continues to place vested interests ahead of ministerial responsibilities, pro-trade lobbyists continue to promote a lack of moral conscience to commercially benefit from a medically fallacious and socially subjective product. This is tantamount to peddling counterfeit or ineffective goods and exploits misplaced beliefs, misguided perceptions and feeds on public naivety not to mention places wild rhinos outside of South Africa under increasing pressure, particularly those in Asia where some cultures believe the horns of Asian rhinos are more potent and desirable than those of their African counterparts. The poaching of South Africa’s rhinos are a national economic, political, environmental, security and international concern. The Minister has had eight solid years to facilitate a contingency plan, implement a workable resolution, utilise and endorse pro-active measures which promote demand reduction and elimination both within South Africa and horn consumptive countries. Many campaigns have been hampered by intent of trade or available resources closed down without explanation. Such actions have has damaged credibility, nurtured hostility and reduced public confidence.

Hardened pro-trade lobbyists have continued to defend trade as a viable solution despite a clear lack of political will and non compliance of the South African government. Remarks such as “who are we to change centuries old Asian traditions?” are used to bolster the argument. In many cultures across the world, much of the old, inhumane and cruel traditions have been outlawed. Slavery was abolished, lotus feet (foot binding) was abolished, many forms of capital punishment were abolished, eunuchs (the removal of male genitalia) abolished, human sacrifices abolished, Sati (the burning or burying alive of widows) abolished and even today movements are in progress to outlaw many other cruel and degrading practices such as FGM, we could go on!

Mankind has hardly made a dent on the evolution timeline and yet in our short existence on this remarkable planet we have, for better or worse reigned supreme. We have pushed the boundaries of our existence through unparalleled technological advances, scientific discoveries and completed expeditions which have pushed human endurance to the limits. We have stretched our hands to reach beyond our own atmosphere and tentatively shone light on the ocean floors where life survives in a blanket of darkness and yet our knowledge of universally iconic animals such as rhinos is very much in its infancy.

Have we forgotten at the heart of this vicious verbal battle and bloody war is an animal which has walked the planet for more than 40 million years and whose future could be extinction? Hardly a surprise we can’t decide how to save them.
