Malaysia's last surviving male Sumatran rhino on brink of death

Tam, Malaysia's last surviving male Sumatran rhino, has just a few more weeks, if not days, to live due to old age.

Tam, who is estimated to be in its mid-30s, showed some improvement in the last two days after it was put in intensive care. The Sabah Wildlife Department on Sunday (May 19) said the rhino was in critical condition.

Sabah Wildlife Department director Augustine Tuuga said the main concern was its age, as rhinos generally have a lifespan of between 35 and 40 years old.

Mr Augustine, in a text reply on Tuesday (May 21), said: "I have received the following update from the veterinarian; Tam has improved slightly over the past two days as a result of intensive care.
"But the problem is age-related. We do not expect it to survive for much longer. The time-frame is likely to be in the days rather than weeks (before its demise)."
Tam and the female rhino Iman are the only two Sumatran rhinos in captivity in Malaysia.

The elusive species has been considered extinct in the wild in Malaysia, given that no Sumatran rhinos were detected in Sabah's wilderness in recent years.

However, a Sumatran rhino was reportedly captured in Indonesia's east Kalimantan region last year.
Over the years, the authorities have been trying to engage with Indonesia in rhino preservation, with a focus on advanced reproductive technology, including in-vitro fertilisation (IVF). Despite claims of ongoing government-to-government talks, efforts have been unsuccessful so far, and nothing concrete has been achieved on the matter.

Seven Chinese rhino poaching suspects to finally stand trial

SEVEN Chinese nationals who are being accused of money laundering and possessing more than 20kg of rhino horn pieces with a combined value of close to $1 million will finally get to defend themselves after prosecutors set February 18 as trial date.

Zeng Dengui (35), Peicon Jang (35), Liu Cheng (23), Yu Xian (25), Yong Zhu (25), Chen Zhiangfu (30) and Qui Jinchang (29) were arrested on December 23 after being found in possession of several pieces of rhino horns weighing 20,98kg.

The trophies, valued at $938 700, were found at a house where the seven rented.

They were charged for allegedly contravening the Parks and Wildlife Act which criminalises “keeping, possessing, selling or disposing of any live specially protected animal, meat or trophy of any such animal”. On Thursday prosecutors added a charge of money laundering in terms of Section 8(3) of the Money laundering and proceeds of crime Act: Chapter 9:23 which criminalises unlawfully acquiring, using or possessing property knowing or suspecting at the time of receipt that such property is the proceed of crime.

Trial on both crimes will kick off on February 18 at the regional court in Hwange, Victoria Falls magistrate Lindiwe Maphosa said while further remanding the group. READ MORE >>> New source: https://www.newzimbabwe.com/seven-chinese-rhino-poaching-suspects-to-finally-stand-trial/

Rhino dies after brave fight

Another rhino has died after a poaching incident in the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park 😪🦏 YET another rhino has died after a poaching incident in the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park.

Despite a slow recovery of the adult female, it was eventually decided to euthanise her due to the animal not adapting to her boma environment.
The rhino had been shot through the hump of her neck, temporarily stunning and immobilising her.

While paralysed, the poachers set about hacking off her horn in a terribly cruel manner, leaving her paralysed, but alive.
The incident was reported to the section ranger and the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Game Capture team, along with the vet, rushed to the scene to assess and stabilise the rhino’s condition.
Treatment was immediately started and the animal was taken to the veterinary boma.

She was monitored regularly and received weekly treatment by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife veterinarians using pharmaceuticals and surgical equipment supplied by African Wildlife Vets.
A decision was eventually made to euthanise the rhino.

The Council of Contributors and Nick Bartlett generously supported the vets and aids on the ground on this project.

The last official national figure reported on 21 September for rhino poaching stood at 508 animals.

According to Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, a total of 142 rhinos were poached in KZN during 2018.

Although this is 80 animals fewer than in 2017 and 20 less than in 2016, the situation remains critical and conservation bodies continue to fight the poaching scourge.

Three Kruger Park rangers arrested for alleged rhino poaching 😞😪🤬 The South African National Parks (SANPArks) has released a statement declaring the arrests a “success”. According to the statement, the suspects were based at the Crocodile Bridge section of the park and are currently in custody for further investigation while they await their first court appearance. “It is always very sad when your own staff become involved in poaching,” said Kruger National Park Managing Executive, Glenn Phillips. "However, I want to congratulate the SANParks and SAPS investigators for their diligent work in bringing these members to book,” he continued. “Slowly but surely we are coming to grips with people within our ranks who are sabotaging our efforts in this campaign. We still have confidence in those who are committed and loyal; and would like to encourage them to continue with the excellent work. We will not be deterred in ensuring that we are successful in continuing the fight against the scourge of wildlife crime in KNP,” Phillips said. “Those who are still involved or know of those involved; and would like to give us information; both the CEO of SANParks and I are willing to listen”, he added.

According to the statement, the arrests were a joint effort by the SANParks Rangers, Environmental Investigation Unit, SAPS and Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation. “SANParks remains committed to doing everything in its power to fight the scourge of poaching,” the statement concludes.

Rhino horn consignment worth R23 million seized at O.R. Tambo Airport 🤬🤬🤬 A K9 team searched several cargo warehouses before consignments were shipped out and a detector dog named Lizzy “reacted positively to a shipment destined” for Dubai in the Middle East, SAPS confirmed in a statement.

The K9 teams worked with the South African Revenue Service, (SARS) and found 36 pieces of rhino horn in a consignment marked ‘decoration items.’ The horns were hidden underneath laminated wooden shit and doormats.
According to the statement published by IOL, Customs Officials “cut open eight boxes attached together with bubble wrap. The horns, destined for Dubai, were hidden underneath decorative items.” As per the SAPS report: TO READ THE FULL ARTICLE HEAD TO TWITTER AND CLICK OUR LATEST TWEET (@ActionForRhinos)

The @sandiegozoo Frozen Zoo is a chance for animal immortality

The cryobank is a rich source of genetic knowledge of hundreds of creatures. It may one day be used to bring endangered species back from the brink and deepen the gene pool of wild populations.

The last male northern white rhinoceros — his name was Sudan — died in March, leaving only two members of the subspecies behind: his daughter and granddaughter.

In the past, those stark facts would have spelled the end. But researchers at the San Diego Zoo’s Institute for Conservation Research — also known as the Frozen Zoo — are working to give northern white rhinos a second chance. Since 1975, the institute has been collecting tissues from creatures, some endangered and some not, then growing the cells in the lab and preserving them at a chilly 321 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. White Rhinos Are Thriving Thanks To Conservation Efforts Just Like This 🦏❤ White rhinos, once endangered with only about 200 in existence, are now thriving with over 20,000 throughout the world thanks to conservation efforts like this one — which means more adorable babies like these two, running, playing, and exploring their surroundings.

The rhino calves were born to mothers Zenzele and Mustang Sally, along with father Roscoe, just three days apart in mid-November and were the very first to be born in The Wilds’ new rhinoceros barn. Mom Zenzele’s own birth was historic as well as she was the first rhino calf born in The Wilds back in 2004, mothering four calves since then.

The Wilds staff has been monitoring the calves,  the 18th and 19th white rhinos born at The Wilds and both appear to be doing very well under their mothers’ care. However, even with the increase in numbers, the species remains classified as near threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). http://cbsloc.al/2iCVA5s
