Ekta Singha is a promising young artist who has created a distinct artistic language of her own. Using an assortment of materials and mediums, she takes inspiration from miniature paintings to create conceptual artworks that are layered with metaphorical and personal references. In many of her canvasses, the artist uses burnt papers and handcrafted papers to create ‘jalis’ inspired by Islamic architecture, like in this work titled ‘I Am Nothing But a Reflection of You’. S.H. Raza, India’s undisputed modern master, went through a marked shift in his artistic style over the decades. In this artwork titled Jaipur, he recalls seventeenth century miniatures from the Malwa and Mewar regions in Rajasthan, whose colours and structures deeply influenced his work. The color and construction of this piece also shows the transition between Raza’s gestural phase and the emergence of the bindu in his work. Expressionist strokes feature in the lower panel of the canvas in yellow, red and sienna, highlighted by patches of green representing vegetation. The upper two quadrants have a controlled network of intersecting triangles and horizontal bands of colours. The bindu and the colours adjacent to it, convey the five fundamental elements of life – earth, water, fire, sky and air. The frame that encases these panels is reminiscent of traditional miniature painting, while also being indicative of Raza’s shifts towards depicting geometric symbology in his art. Perhaps India’s greatest abstract modern artist, S.H. Raza is acclaimed internationally for his iconic ‘Bindu’. He perceived the Bindu as the centre of all creation and existence, stating that “Bindu is a source of energy, source of life.” The black Bindu in this painting represents the concentration of all the energy and creation, and the four coloured areas surrounding the Bindu represent the fundamental elements of nature. Their equal divisions represent their collective balance in nature. The Bindus in five different colours, encompassed inside the bigger black Bindu, have two interpretations. First, all the coloured Bindus represent five fundamentals of life. Their individual representations in a circular format, symbolize that they are complete, balanced individual entities. Second, these Bindus encompassed inside a bigger black Bindu represent their coming together to make up the cosmos. Shop this signed, limited edition serigraph by S.H. Raza on www.artisera.com.

Undoubtedly India’s most famous and international acclaimed abstract artist, S.H. Raza was one of the pioneers of Indian Modern Art. His career, that spanned over 6 decades, saw his style transform drastically over the years. Raza studied in France and then lived there from the 1950's until 2010, but visited India often during this time. He returned to the heart of the country which was his own, to the interiors of the vast state called Madhya Pradesh, where he was born. His vivid childhood memories of the terrains of Central India and memories from his visits in 1959 and 1962, are retrieved as fragments of his rendezvous in this work, thus aptly giving it the title of ‘Encounter’. Keechak Sairandhri: Oleograph from Ravi Varma Press
.
In the great epic Mahabharata, Draupadi is the beautiful daughter of King Drupada, and wife of the five Pandava princes. When her husbands were banished from their kingdoms, Draupadi stayed back in the kingdom of Matsya. There, she disguised herself and worked as a servant, or sairandhri, for King Virata's wife Sudeshna. Queen Sudeshna had a brother called Kichaka (Keechaka), who was overcome by Draupadi's beauty and had bad intentions towards her. This artwork captures one scene between Keechak and Draupadi when he tried approaching her indecently. Draupadi later sought the help of Bhima, her husband, for protection against Kichaka, who killed him. Shop this oleograph from the Ravi Varma Press on www.artisera.com.

Arpita Basu’s art is bound to the rhythms and traditions of Bengal. Steeped in lyrical folksy beauty, her watercolours capture the idyllic rhythms of everyday life in its towns, cities and villages. But the textually rich canvasses layered on handmade rice paper, also throw up a keen, multi-layered socio-cultural commentary on rural life in the coastal state. The Kolkata-based artist, whose work is part of the archival collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, also reinvents the age-old medium of Kantha in many of her artworks.
