The Eco Ambassadors are halfway through their first week of training! Today we are on a field trip to City Park, riding bikes and picking up trash. These #youthvolunteers train at the Aquarium and Insectarium and volunteer the rest of the summer. So glad to have them! #audubonaquarium #audubonnatureinstitute #trashpickup #audubonyouthvols
Are you hanging out like our pitcher plants? Pitcher plants are several different species of carnivorous plants which have modified leaves acting as a prey-trapping mechanism featuring a deep cavity filled with digestive liquid. This allows then to obtain needed nutrients even in poor soil. #audubonaquarium #audubonnatureinstitute #youthvolunteer #audubonyouthvols #pitcherplant #pitcherplantsofinstagram #conservation
Senior Spotlight: Sonia M. has given over 1400 service hours in her 5 years as a youth volunteer. In the fall, she is headed off to LSU to study animal science and pre-veterinary medicine. She has a hard time choosing a favorite memory, but her first time tree planting stands out; she got her foot stuck in the mud and lost a shoe. It took several other volunteers to help pull her free! She advises new youth volunteers to take advantage of as many activities and opportunities as they can. As you can see from the photos, Sonia has grown up, but has not grown out of her love for animals. You will be greatly missed, Sonia! #audubonyouthvols #zooyouthvolunteer #audubonzoo #audubonnatureinstitute #seniors #changingtheworld #zooeducation
Just a little longer until the summer is in full swing for Audubon youth programs. From overnights to training and volunteering we will have a busy two months. Couldn’t do it without the enthusiasm of our youth volunteers!

Our next Senior Spotlight shines on Catelynn J. who trained as an AquaKid at Audubon Aquarium in 2013. Since then she has volunteered over 700 hours, including placements on the outreach vehicle Aquavan! She heads off to college to study zoology. Her favorite memory was getting to interact with one of our penguins. Her advice to new volunteers is “Keep going even it is tough, there is always something new and exciting around the corner.” We will miss you Catelynn!

The Audubon Youth Council planned and ran a very successful fundraising dance for other youth volunteers in April. The money raised will go towards @l.p.b.f! These are some very driven youth! #youthvols #lpbf #lakepontchartrain #audubonnatureinstitute #audubonyouthvols #fundraiser #youthcouncil
Starting the work week off with another Senior Spotlight! Today we feature Lily L. who has volunteered over 400 hours since she started at Audubon Aquarium as an AquaKid in 2013. She is heading to college this fall to study Biology. Her favorite Audubon memory was during volunteer training when the training class took a field trip to visit Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) and a boat ride in Cocodrie. Lily’s advice to new volutneers: “Take advantage of every opportunity you can to do extra events such as tree planting, field trips, and overnight events. Those have been my favorite memories at Audubon. Hands-down, the most fun things I've ever done have been these extra opportunities that Audubon offers to the youth volunteers”. Check out the picture of Lily early on in her volunteering and her senior picture. We wish you the best of luck Lily!

Over the next couple of weeks, we will be highlighting members of our 2018 Senior class of youth volunteers. While they are heading off to their next step, they will always be a part of the Audubon family!
Elise F. has been a volunteer for the last 5 years and has put in over 1200 hours during that time. She is heading off to college to study Biology. Her favorite memory from volunteering is from her first summer. During training, her Jr Keeper class got stuck in the back of the zoo in a thunderstorm. They had to walk all the way up to the front of the zoo and no one had a change of clothes, so they spent the rest of the day cold and wet. Elise advises new volunteers “[to not] care about what others think about you. The only opinion that matters is your own.” The picture on the left is from Elise’s first year volunteering and the photo on the right is her senior photo. We will miss you, Elise!

Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) Nola volunteers spent a successful day removing the invasive plant Chinese Tallow from Audubon Louisiana Nature Center! Chinese Tallow grows fast and takes over the space from native plants, it also poisons the soil preventing other plants from growing. By removing it today we helped restore a part of our native Louisiana habitat! #youthvolunteer #conservation #audubonaquarium #audubonzoo #audubonnaturecenter #audubonyouthvols #chinesetallowtree #invasivespecies #louisiana #invasiveremoval #volunteerwork #yccnola
