Now in its 19th year, SOMArts’ Día de Los Muertos exhibition, curated by Rio Yańez and Carolina Quintanilla, is one of the most internationally diverse Day of the Dead celebrations in the United States. The theme this year is "Honoring our Ancestors by Fighting for the Future." @yohanajunker , GTU PhD candidate and friend of CARe, collaborated with fellow artist Coletivo Desbordar to make the altar featured in the exhibition. Entitled “Marielle Franco: Co-Creating the Future with Our Ancestors,” the altar honors the Brazilian councilwoman who was brutally executed on March 14th, 2018, after leaving a black women’s empowerment event. As a black, lesbian, single mother - born and raised in the Maré favela - Franco worked against racism, inequality, and homophobia in Brazil. The exhibition unveiling takes place on Friday, October 12, 6–9pm, $12–15 sliding scale admission with a multimedia dance performance by La Mezcla and a Dia de los Muertos inspired artist market.
Next Thursday is the start of our NEW meditation group, lead by Institute for Buddhist Studies student, Quang Le. Join us to unwind and take a much-needed break from your day! #mindfulness #meditation #gtu #buddhism #artandreligion #bayarea #bayareaevents #freeevent
