NEW VIDEO!... Sportsfishing for Sustainable Livelihoods in Papua New Guinea. Check out the full version at the link in our bio.. .
.
Rapid social, economic and environmental changes in Papua New Guinea present new and complex problems for the country. With most people still living on their traditional lands, balancing the country’s need for development while preserving its rich natural and cultural heritage is one of its greatest challenges. The National Fisheries Authority of PNG and James Cook University @jamescookuniversity, with support from the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research @aciaraustralia, have initiated a ground-breaking research initiative aimed at exploring sportsfishing as an alternative, sustainable livelihood for coastal communities in PNG. Working in close collaboration with local communities, the project brings together industry, government agencies, international research institutions and donors, to develop best practice guidelines for the growing recreational fishing and ecotourism industry. In the first project of its kind in the region, it offers a model for developing sportsfishing as a sustainable, collaborative industry that allows for socio-economic development and environmental protection while enabling people to preserve their ties to culture and their land and seas.

#Repost @oceanswithoutborders The Oceans Without Borders programme is a new initiative launched as a collaborative, non-profit project between &Beyond and The Africa Foundation to address the challenges facing East African marine ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. The scope of the project spans 3000 km of African coastline and 3 countries, extending from Tanzania to the World Heritage reefs of South Africa’s iSimangaliso Wetland Park, and including linkages with terrestrial systems. It encompasses three key islands; Mnemba Atoll in Tanzania, an important turtle nesting site, Vamizi Island in the Quirimbas Archipelago of northern Mozambique, which boasts some of the highest coral and fish diversity in East Africa, and Benguerra Island in central Mozambique, home to one of the last remaining dugong populations in the region. A primary objective of Oceans Without Borders is to strengthen the current conservation status of these islands while enabling community development. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the short period just after sunrise and just before sunset, the low angle of the sun causes a beautiful dappled light as the sunlight penetrates the water. Photographers often call this period the ‘magic hour’, as the beautiful soft light provides the perfect ambience to a landscape or seascape. Here, in the Houtman Abrolhos Islands, Western Australia, the late afternoon light dapples over a colony of brightly coloured staghorn Acropora. #light #dappledlight #magichour #uwphotography #underwaterphotography #acropora #houtmanabrolhos #westernaustralia #explorewesternaustralia #australia #nauticamhousings #nikonaustralia #wildtropics #tethysimages @tethysimages #worldoceansday #scicomm #marineconservation #oceans #oceanconservation
