Another part of the Aarti is setting down a little basket of flowers with a lit candle as a a sacrifice to Maa Ganga, also called Goddess Ganga. She is not only a river but a Goddess in herself who brings life, death, spirituality, food, water etc, to all places she reaches, and beyond.

As we sat down by the smaller, for local families, burning ghat (not the one depicted ☝️) we watched as a family laid one of their previous members on a stack of wood, the assigned low cast walked a number of rounds around the body carrying the holy fire which he let down under the pile. While the guide we had told us about the types of bodies which are not burnt, but sunk straight in the Ganges: babies, pregnant women, suicides, leprocy patients, cobra bitten, saddhus (holy men) and perhaps some I forgot, ash from the newly lit fire began to lightly fall down and settle on us like a fine layer of fresh powdery snow.

These images of the Ganga Aarti might seem quiet and still but on site the coordinated movements of the seven saddhus on stage are accompanied by the loud klanging and ringing of a cacophony of bells as well as continuous chanting enhanced by speakers. Like everything in India, it makes the eardrums hurt just a little when you come too close.

Holy site, burial ground, fishing water, bath tub, washing machine, tourist attraction, transportation etc. The Ganga is everything here, and everything here is, somehow in one way or the other, about the Ganga.

Animals have a different, more visible, position in Indian society than we would be used to at home. Cows, buffalos, pigs and goats roam free around the cities, much like the children. Some are more well cared for than others.

Out of all the cities in gigantic India perhaps Varanasi is after all the holiest. People live here, but people also travel here to die by the Ganga. This is the main burning ghat, where the fires consuming the dead bodies never go out. Hundreds of bodies are consumed here round the clock, every day.

The Ganga runs across a vast section of India supplying it with a holy pulse and all along it various rituals take place. This is the daily Ganga Aarti ceremony, which has a daily counterpart in the evening, seen from the Assi Ghat.
Like celebrating lucia on steroids twice a day, every day.
