green beauty // we hear so much about it, but does it matter, and why?

Yes, our skin is our largest organ, and yes it matters what we put on it. But how green do you go, and what really matters.

For me, the big items are BHA and BHT, coal tar dyes, DEA, dibutyl phthalate, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, parabens, parfum, PEGs, petrolatum, siloxanes, sodium laureth sulphate and triclosan - also know as the “dirty dozen” of skin care products.

Many of these ingredients soak into the skin and function as weak estrogens, disrupting our hormones and increasing risk factors for breast cancer. Talc has also recently been linked to ovarian cancer! (I’ll steer clear, thanks 👋🏼) @environmentalworkinggroup makes a great app to help you quickly look up your products by name, and rates the ingredients by toxicity level.

There’s many great brands out there - but I’ve recently been loving @caudalie’s line of anti-aging glycolic acid formulas (trying to make up for many years of reckless sun exposure 🤦🏼‍♀️) . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Since it seems to come up in at least ⅓ patient visits lately, let’s break down the pros and cons, and let you decide if it’s worth all the craze.

First off, celery is loaded in minerals, electrolytes, and antioxidants. It is true that there is supportive research on the phytochemicals in celery helping to reduce blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and fight against oxidative stress.

However, there’s still no evidence to prove juicing celery has any more benefits over other dark leafy greens, and it’s part of the dirty dozen, so you better believe it’s crucial to be buying it organic! Also, juicing it strips it of all of its fibre, which provides numerous benefits of its own. It’s also problematic to drink in large quantities for those on a FODMAP diet, or on anticoagulants like warfarin (it’s high in vitamin K).

With that being said, all of my patients are anecdotally reporting benefits. Many say their heartburn has resolved, their constipation has improved, and their skin is much clearer. Time will tell if it truly raises HCL and cures chronic viruses like the internet claims 🤔

If all these benefits are the result of some green juice, then I say go for it (assuming it’s organic and you’re not in warfarin). But please, don’t forget to still eat your veggies 🥦 🥑🍆🍅🥬

I’ll admit it, I’m a Valentine’s Day grinch 🙋🏼‍♀️. I’m nauseated by the message today tends to express - show your love for someone in materialistic ways 👎🏻

But this morning at a sweaty session at @6ix_cycle (a personal self care favourite), the instructor preached a message that really hit home - “Push harder, because you’re here for you. This is the one moment in your day where no one else is asking anything from you, but you”.
.
It’s easy to forget to focus inwards and give ourselves the love we deserve in a such a fast paced and overly comparative climate. And when she said that, I realized today doesn’t have to be about who got the biggest bouquet of flowers, but instead it can be a fantastic reminder to love the hell out of yourself!!!
.
So while you may be tempted to get caught up in the hype of chocolates, overpriced set-menus, and todays message that’s continually telling us to consume, step back and give yourself some solid love. Take a longer shower, snuggle your furbaby tighter, or maybe have that second cup of coffee #treatyoself. You deserve it!!!
