Busy weekend! On Saturday we teamed up with CJ Clean Up Day and the Cultural & Ecological Enhancement Network to clean up Cave Junction and remove noxious weeds like knapweed (meadow and spotted) and scotchbroom from Forks State Park. Thank you to our volunteers and additional partners, including Rogue Basin Partnership and the Jackson-Josephine CWMA, Oregon State Parks, the Rotary Club of the Illinois Valley, Healthy U, the IV Family Coalition and SOLVE Oregon.
We all have a responsibility to prevent the spread of noxious weeds, and play a role in keeping the Illinois Valley healthy and clean! How do you care for your community?

Did you see us at the Cave Junction Farmers Market? Last Friday our board “went fishin” with some of the youth at the market, teaching them about some of the species in the Illinois River Watershed! What fish and critters do you see living in our waterways?

Last Friday we partnered with the Oregon Caves Nat’l Monument, the Illinois River Valley Arts Council, and the Wild Rivers Ranger District to host a field trip for the Illinois Valley schools SMILE Clubs! For their end of year trip, we tested water quality in Sucker Creek, hiked through Chinquapinn Campground, and made eco-friendly bird feeders! Thanks to all our partners and teachers for making this a success for the students 🌲🏔🏞 #environmentaleducation #environment #illinoisvalley #oregon #southernoregon #kalmiopsiswilderness #students #waterquality #SWCD #watershedcouncil #community
What do you love about the Illinois Valley?
Our Watershed coordinator and board members were out at the farmers market in Jubilee Park looking to find out what YOU love about the IV! We will be at the market at least once a month, so come talk to us and find out exactly who is your Soil & Water Conservation District and Watershed Council!

Notice something new in town? Spring cleaning put a bee in our bonnets, and we finally got our signs up at our offices! Special thanks to Kevin for the technical work and ladder climbing 😎

The Illinois River and recreation areas bear scars from the Klondike fire from this past fire season, but underneath the skeletal shrubbery life is pushing its way back to the surface!
Speaking of returning life, mid winter through early spring (aka now!) is the best time to be planting on your land. For more information about planting times and land management, come by our offices and pick up a copy of our quarterly newsletter!

The Wildfire Forum last week was a wonderful opportunity to hear from professionals about their plans and needs for mitigating fire in southern Oregon. We heard from the State Fire Marshal, the Southern Oregon ODF Director, the Fire + Rescue Forest Division Chief, and the Green Springs Rural Fire District. The diversity in perspectives and general consensus on the monumental project we face in adapting and mitigating fire and smoke was enlightening, and the crowd (or at least I) left with a sense of purpose and inspiration despite the complexity of the issue. How do you prepare for fire season?

We had a wonderful afternoon learning about turbidity and erosion with all the SMILE Club kids and Mrs. Clements! 🐟🏞 Special shout-out to our excellent volunteers Kyndra & Hawley for helping out with the experiment stations! The IVSWCD couldn’t make these activities happen without volunteer support from our community. 💚
