See y'all in August! I need to focus on finishing my latest draft so I'm taking a break from social media.
QOTD: What is a dream you've been chasing for a while?
*
I LOVE books. I love stories. And yes, I love writing. I don't love the insecurities and jealousies it fills me with though. My book came out 2 years ago and so often it feels like I'm stuck in the slow lane while every author friend I have has a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th book coming out or under contract.

I start wondering if I'm even a writer anymore. If I'm capable of finishing another book. If I'll ever reach any more of my dreams and goals. I have so much self doubt. And I know that a lot of this is my fault because I don't prioritize writing in my life. I'm on Insta. I check email and social media and spend an hour pouring over the library website. I read instead of write.

Maybe now is the moment when I need to say, "enough." All that other stuff goes on hold and if I'm going to say I'm a writer then I write. Finish the darn book. Stop being my own worst enemy. I'm still deciding, but it feels right.

We'll see if I'm strong enough to uninstall Twitter, FB, and Insta on my phone. Just for a bit. Until my book is done. No one else will prioritize writing for me so I need to put on my big girl pants and put my writing first.

Back to books: MONDAY'S NOT COMING by @writeinbk is one of those books that stays with you years after you read it. All of Tiffany's books are that way, actually. I feel so lucky to have met her in person and shared a few book events with her in 2017. I keep hoping some of her genius will rub off on me 😂.
*
Summary:
Monday Charles is missing, and only Claudia seems to notice. Claudia and Monday have always been inseparable—more sisters than friends. So when Monday doesn’t turn up for the first day of school, Claudia’s worried.

When she doesn’t show for the second day, or second week, Claudia knows that something is wrong. Monday wouldn’t just leave her to endure tests and bullies alone. Not after last year’s rumors and not with her grades on the line. Now Claudia needs her best—and only—friend more than ever. But Monday’s mother refuses to give Claudia a straight answer, and Monday’s sister April is even less help.

As Claudia digs deeper into her friend’s disappearance, she discovers that no one seems to remember the last time they saw Monday. How can a teenage girl just vanish without anyone noticing that she’s gone?

QOTD: Would you survive a zombie apocalypse?
*
Nope. I am way too out of shape.

I'm not a fan of zombie books or movies. At all. And yet, I've fallen in love with several over the years, the latest being WORLD WAR Z. It's tied for the top spot with THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS by M. R. Carey.

I loved the oral history approach of World War Z. It's such a different way to tell a story, but in this case, super effective.
*
Summary:
The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living, or at least the undead, hell of that dreadful time. World War Z is the result. Never before have we had access to a document that so powerfully conveys the depth of fear and horror, and also the ineradicable spirit of resistance, that gripped human society through the plague years.

QOTD: What's the strangest event or exhibit you've been to?
*
I visited a shop in Seattle last summer that had real shrunken heads on display as well as a description of how native Amazonians made them. It was disturbing on many levels.
*
Back to books: one of the books I'm looking forward to reading in July is THE PROS OF CONS by writer trio Alison Cherry, Lindsay Ribar, and Michelle Schusterman. I got to meet them in person this past weekend and pick up a signed copy. I love that their book takes place at a taxidermy convention! Plus, I'm always up for laughs and inclusive writing.
*
Summary:
Drummer Phoebe Byrd prides herself on being one of the guys, and she's ready to prove it by kicking all their butts in the snare solo competition at the Indoor Percussion Association Convention.Writer Vanessa Montoya-O'Callaghan has been looking forward to the WTFcon for months. Not just because of the panels and fanfiction readings but because WTFcon is where she'll finally meet Soleil, her internet girlfriend, for the first time.Taxidermy assistant Callie Buchannan might be good at scooping brains out of deer skulls, but that doesn't mean it's her passion. Since her parents' divorce, her taxidermist father only cares about his work, and assisting him at the World Taxidermy and Fish-Carving Championships is the only way Callie knows to connect with him. When a crazy mix-up in the hotel lobby brings the three girls together, they form an unlikely friendship against a chaotic background of cosplay, competition, and carcasses!

QOTD: What Hogwarts house are you? And have you ever attended a fan con?
*
Last post of the week! I'm off to LA for @leviosa2019, a Harry Potter conference. I think this is my 12th HP con??? I don't know, I've lost track, lol. My first was way back in 2006.

I'm so excited to see old friends and meet new ones! I'm staff photographer so I'll be running around like crazy. While I didn't bring any costumes, you can bet I'll be showing my Hufflepuff pride all weekend!

QOTD: What is your dream career?
*
I'd love to be a full-time writer or librarian. I enjoy programming a lot, but it's a career I fell into rather than one I wanted as a kid.

Today's job ennui could be fueled by the fact I'm writing documentation rather than code, of course.

QOTD: Were/are you bullied in school?
*
Growing up, I was small & nerdy. Prime bullying fodder. I learned to wear shorts under my skirts to avoid having them flipped up, belts on my pants to cinch them so tight I couldn't be de-pantsed on the bus...again. I learned not to make eye contact in the halls. The bullying stopped by sophomore year, thankfully. By then I had a good group of friends and the bullies were too busy tearing each other down to bother with me anymore.

Those memories are still sharp & clear in my mind though. Which is one reason WOLF HOLLOW resonated so much for me because it perfectly captured that helpless feeling & tackles the way both kids & adults can be bullies.
*
Summary:
Annabelle has lived in Wolf Hollow all her life: a quiet place, still scarred by two world wars. But when cruel, manipulative Betty arrives in town, Annabelle's calm world is shattered, along with everything she's ever known about right and wrong.

When Betty accuses gentle loner Toby - a traumatised ex-soldier - of a terrible act, Annabelle knows he's innocent. Then Betty disappears . . .

Now Annabelle must protect Toby from the spiralling accusations and hysteria, until she can prove to Wolf Hollow what really happened to Betty.

QOTD: what is your favorite thing you've done this weekend?
*
I've been MIA the past two days because I'm at @dfwcon. I taught a class on voice at the crack of dawn yesterday and have been drinking in as many awesome writing classes as possible since. I love that DFWCon offers a variety of classes for every writer level from beginner to multi-published author.

This morning I was in an Instagram class and now I'm learning about world building based on science and anthropology. I nerd well.

Plus, the keynote speaker was @chuck_wendig and any time you have a chance to see him talk live you should DO IT!
QOTD: If you had a time machine, where would you go?
*
Personally, I'd be hoping my time machine came with a Time Lord, in which case the answer is ANYWHERE. But if I'm going solo, I'd like to spend an afternoon in the little village I lived in when I was 8. Specifically around that time period. I'd pop into the 5 & 10p store to search for treasures, sit in the square under the big clock eating chocolate from the card shop, then visit the willow trees I used as my personal playground.

I don't think I'd go back 500 years as the characters in TIME SIGHT do. Unless I had a converse & trench coat wearing companion...
*
Summary:
Will’s mother is in danger overseas, and his father must find her, so Will and his little brother are packed off to relatives in Scotland. Will feels useless. He can’t save his mother. He can’t help his father. And when he tries to amuse his brother on the plane ride, he can’t even locate the images in Jamie’s book—the hidden pictures that everyone else can see. Once at the family’s ancestral castle, though, Will tries again. And as he delicately adjusts his focus, suddenly his eyes tune in to a different visual frequency—the past.

Looking back five hundred years is interesting . . . at first. But when Jamie impulsively leaps through the opening in time, Will and his cousin Nan must follow, into a past so dangerous that Will isn’t sure how he will get everyone safely home.
