QOTD: Which books have you read soley because you saw them on Bookstagram?
*
Confession: while I adore books, super long novels always give me pause. Do I really want to devote that much time to a single book? I could have read 3 or 4 instead! Is that giant book really worth the word count or will I get bored? Despite that there are some big books that I adore (like THE NAME OF THE WIND, STRANGE THE DREAMER, or in this case, NEVERNIGHT). So I resisted reading NEVERNIGHT for quite a while. But eventually all the gushing and bookstagram love wore me down. And I loved it, lol. I'm really glad I finally gave in!

Another #HedgehogsAndBooks pic for you! This time it's @rock_andor_roll's gorgeous UNDER ROSE-TAINTED SKIES. We're starting to get more books about mental illness, which is so needed, and really makes me happy.

But in that slowly increasing selection, tbis book is definitely a stand out!

Norah has agoraphobia and OCD. When groceries are left on the porch, she can’t step out to get them. Struggling to snag the bags with a stick, she meets Luke. He’s sweet and funny, and he just caught her fishing for groceries. Because of course he did.

Norah can’t leave the house, but can she let someone in? As their friendship grows deeper, Norah realizes Luke deserves a normal girl. One who can lie on the front lawn and look up at the stars. One who isn’t so screwed up.

Readers themselves will fall in love with Norah in this poignant, humorous, and deeply engaging portrait of a teen struggling to find the strength to face her demons.

QOTD: What movie premiere would you most like to see?
*
This post is a whole day late because yesterday was bananas. My HP group got together to see an early screening of THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD and then we stood around for 30 minutes afterward, flailing, screaming, theorizing and generally nerding out. It was awesome.

But I'm a bit sleep deprived today, lol. Still worth it.
*
Back to books: it's no secret I am an unrepentant book addict. I adore them. Crave them. Read compulsively. Stories have power.

Which is EXACTLY the theme of NIGHTBOOKS by J.A. White! It's sort of like if Stephen King had written the Scheherazade tale for the MG crowd! I can't wait to read it!
*
Summary:
Alex has loved scary stories his whole life.

He never imagined he be trapped in one.

When Alex sneaks out in the middle of the night, he becomes imprisoned by the witch Natacha in her magical apartment. Another child in the apartment, Yasmin, assures Alex that she's already tried every means of escape. Only Natacha holds the bonekeys that lead back to their world, and she'll never part from them.

But Natacha likes stories. And Alex's only chance for survival is to keep Natacha satisfied by reading her one of his own hair-raising tales each night. But Alex is running out of time--and original stories--and he's desperate for a way out of this twisted place.

QOTD: Is there an author you're proud to have discovered before they became writing superstars?
*
I read Laini Taylor's first book AGES ago, when it first came out and fell instantly in love. Long before Karou, Strange, and Sarai there was Magpie Windwitch and I adored her. I wanted to run away with Magpie, Talon, and her crow cohorts. I wanted to reweave reality. And thus my obsession with Laini Taylor books began 😁. Reading early books by authors I love also reminds me that every career is different. My 1st book wasn't a supernova. But I love it and those characters. And just because that first book didn't win awards or make best-seller lists doesn't mean future books won't. Besides, maybe my 1st book was just what someone needed in that particular moment of their life. That's what BLACKBRINGER was for me - the perfect book at the perfect time. And because of that, it will always be my favorite Laini Taylor book. *
Summary:
With her faithful gang of crows, Magpie Windwitch, granddaughter of the West Wind, travels the world fighting devils. But when a devil escapes from a bottle sealed by the ancient Djinn King himself- the creator of the world- she may be in over her head. How can a single faerie, even with the help of her friends, hope to defeat the impenetrable darkness of the Blackbringer?

QOTD: Would you have a pet dragon if you could?
*
Dragons are a frequent feature in fantasy books, like Anne Leonard's MOTH AND SPARK. But mostly they seem like a lot of trouble. Despite that, I'd probably give owning one a go if I had enough space, time, & fire extinguishers. Hagrid & I would have been best buddies, lol.

Pets are on my mind this week as I try to figure out if adding an emotional support animal to our household would be a good idea. And if so, what?! We already have a lot of pets so I'm a bit reluctant.
*
Summary:
Prince Corin has been chosen to free the dragons from their bondage to the Empire, but dragons aren't big on directions. They have given him some of their power, but none of their knowledge. No one, not the dragons nor their riders, is even sure what keeps the dragons in the Empire's control. Tam, sensible daughter of a well-respected doctor, had no idea before she arrived in the capital that she is a Seer, gifted with visions. When the two run into each other (quite literally) in the library, sparks fly and Corin impulsively asks Tam to dinner. But it's not all happily ever after. Never mind that the prince isn't allowed to marry a commoner: war is coming to Caithen. Torn between Corin's quest to free the dragons and his duty to his country, the lovers must both figure out how to master their powers in order to save Caithen. With a little help from a village of secret wizards and a rogue dragonrider, they just might pull it off.

QOTD: what do you do to cheer up on a blue day?
*
The past weeks have been rough for my daughter. We started transitioning depression meds to something new today & the psychiatrist warned us things might get worse before they get better. She wasn't wrong.

Thus we're trying to get through the day. One minute at a time. Right now we're watching The Great British Baking Show and sipping tea.
*
Back to books: I am currently obsessed with all things fall & Rachel Caine's gorgeous PAPER AND FIRE has the perfect #fallaesthetic! Plus it's a fantastic series 😁. I can't wait for the next book!

Series Summary:

Summary:
17yo Eve isn't looking for trouble--she's too busy looking over her shoulder. The robot gladiator she spent months building has been reduced to a smoking wreck, she's on the local gangster's wanted list, and the only thing keeping her grandpa alive is the money she just lost to the bookies. Worst of all, she's discovered she can somehow destroy machines with the power of her mind, and a bunch of puritanical fanatics are building a coffin her size because of it. If she's ever had a worse day, Eve can't remember it. The problem is, Eve has had a worse day--one that lingers in her nightmares and the cybernetic implant where her memories used to be. Her discovery of a handsome android named Ezekiel--called a "Lifelike" because they resemble humans--will bring her world crashing down and make her question whether her entire life is a lie. Lemon Fresh and her robotic sidekick Cricket in tow, Eve will trek across deserts of glass, battle unkillable bots, and infiltrate towering megacities to save the ones she loves...and learn the truth about the bloody secrets of her past.

QOTD: which books do you read for fun?
*
My kids & I have been listening to the STORY THIEVES series in the car when we run errands & I adore it! This is such a fun, clever series that appeals to me, my 14yo daughter, AND my 8yo son. Finding something we all love & look forward to is a rarity.

This has quickly become one of my feel good reads and can always induce a giggle.

Summary:
Life is boring when you live in the real world, instead of starring in your own book series. Owen knows that better than anyone, what with the real world’s homework and chores.
But everything changes the day Owen sees the impossible happen—his classmate Bethany climb out of a book in the library. It turns out Bethany’s half-fictional and has been searching every book she can find for her missing father, a fictional character.
Bethany can’t let anyone else learn her secret, so Owen makes her a deal: All she has to do is take him into a book in Owen’s favorite Kiel Gnomenfoot series, and he’ll never say a word. Besides, visiting the book might help Bethany find her father… …Or it might just destroy the Kiel Gnomenfoot series, reveal Bethany’s secret to the entire world, and force Owen to live out Kiel Gnomenfoot’s final ( very final) adventure.

QOTD: Which historical figure most inspires you?
*
When it comes to famous figures, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr stands out. I cannot imagine doing all that he did, having that strength & courage.

Which is why I love Nic Stone's DEAR MARTIN. The MC, Justyce, feels so damn real and his letters to Dr. King are heartfelt, hard, and impassioned. His struggle to apply Dr. King's words and lessons to our present really resonated with me.

People in general still have so far to go. But each of us has the power to change lives, to make the world a tiny bit better. To choose kindness, compassion, love. To be brave & stand with those being bullied, abused, discriminated, disenfranchised. To raise our voice & say "no, I won't stand by."
*
Summary:
Justyce McAllister is a good kid, an honor student, and always there to help a friend—but none of that matters to the police officer who just put him in handcuffs. Despite leaving his rough neighborhood behind, he can't escape the scorn of his former peers or the ridicule of his new classmates.

Justyce looks to the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for answers. But do they hold up anymore? He starts a journal to Dr. King to find out.

Then comes the day Justyce goes driving with his best friend, Manny, windows rolled down, music turned up— way up, sparking the fury of a white off-duty cop beside them. Words fly. Shots are fired. Justyce and Manny are caught in the crosshairs. In the media fallout, it's Justyce who is under attack.

QOTD: Do you write letters? Or only emails?
*
My husband & I met when I was 17 & he was a sophomore in college. The first 4 years of our relationship were long distance. This was before email. So we sent letters each week talking about our lives, our dreams, the weird everyday things that happened. Hundreds of letters. And we kept them all.

My husband would put his name as a different cartoon character on the return label and sometimes add drawings to the envelopes. I treasure those letters and pull them out to read sometimes, fascinated by the people we used to be & events I've long forgotten.

The last year of our long distance time we switched to emails for convenience and all those notes are gone. I regret their loss. And the loss of a time when letters and postcards, things we can hold & keep, were an everyday part of life.
It's no wonder then that I couldn't resist buying FLOATING WORLDS, a collection of letters between two famous friends.
*
Summary:
In the Fall of 1969, while collaborating on a childrens book, Edward Gorey & Paul F. Neumeyer exchanged numerous letters. Gorey decorated each envelope he sent with his signature art style. FLOATING WORLDS is a memoir, told through those letters, of a deep friendship, a moment in history, and a love of books that spanned thousands of miles. Thirty-eight of Gorey's illustrated envelopes are pictured in the book.

QOTD: Are you a dog or a cat person? *
I'm an every-animal-under-the-sun person! 😂 Seriosly, we have a small zoo: 2 big dogs, 2 cats, 2 hedgehogs, 2 fish, & a ridiculously fuzzy hamster. Sounds like a Noah's ARC situation, I know, lol.

A coworker brought her Chihuahua/Daschund puppy to work today & I melted into a puddle of goo on the floor. Then I stole the puppy & snuggled her for an hour. Sadly she's gone now & I'm having puppy withdrawls.
*
Back to books: the cover of FOR A MUSE OF FIRE BY Heidi Helig is gorgeous & it sounds like a great read. This book is high on my TBR list! It's also the PERFECT book this Guy Fawkes day!
*
Summary:
Jetta’s family is famed as the most talented troupe of shadow players in the land. With Jetta behind the scrim, their puppets seem to move without string or stick—a trade secret, they say. In truth, Jetta can see the souls of the recently departed and bind them to the puppets with her blood.

But ever since the colonizing army conquered their country, the old ways are forbidden, so Jetta must never show, never tell. Her skill and fame are her family’s way to earn a spot aboard the royal ship to Aquitan, where shadow plays are the latest rage, and where rumor has it the Mad Emperor has a spring that cures his ills—and could cure Jetta’s, too. Because seeing spirits is not the only thing that plagues her.

But as rebellion seethes and as Jetta meets a young smuggler, she will face truths and decisions that she never imagined—and safety will never seem so far away.

QOTD: Waffles, pancakes, or neither?
*
I am pretty sure my kids would happily eat pancakes for every meal. Sure they flirt with the occasional belgian waffle, but the love affair never lasts long, lol.

I'm more of an omelette girl, personally. Although IHOP had these red velvet pancakes that were utterly scrumptious.

Can you tell it's close to dinner & I need to get groceries? 😂
*
Back to books: BROKEN THINGS was one of my fave October reads. I adore a good thriller/mystery. Even more than red velvet pancakes. I really admire Lauren Oliver's characterization & plotting. She writes riveting books.
*
Summary:
Everyone thinks Mia and Brynn killed their best friend. That driven by their obsession with a novel called The Way into Lovelornthe three girls had imagined themselves into the magical world where their fantasies became twisted, even deadly.

The only thing is: they didn’t do it.

But as the lines begin to blur between past and present and fiction and reality, the girls must confront what really happened in the woods all those years ago—no matter how monstrous.
