Photo by @junmichaelpark. Sanbang-san Mountain and Yongmeori Coast in southwest Jeju Island are a sight to behold. The myth is that a hunter's arrow missed a deer and hit the butt of the God of Heavens. Angered by this intrusion, the God pulled off the peak of Halla-san Mountain and threw it west, creating this rocky mountain of 395 meters.
โ €
Yongmeori Coast off the bottom of Sanbang-san Mountain looks as though a dragon's head is delving into the water; hence the name. It is a geological wonder created by continous stacking and erosion of sandstone over millions of years.
โ €
Although I have been to Jeju numerous times, this was only my second visit to the coast. When winds are strong and tides are high, entrance is limited. Today, the weather was amazing and the water was calm. I felt so lucky to be able to go back to my favorite place on Jeju Island.

Photos by @junmichaelpark for @monoclemagazine. In August, on the last night of my stay in Beijing, I got an email from Monocleโ€™s DOP asking me to go to Qingdao to photograph their famous International Beer Festival. I hesitated for a minute before replying yes, as I was exhausted from the two-week trip. And it turned out to be one of the wackiest and most fun assignments ever. The Chinese know how to drink and party! It was a grand finale to my China trip, haha!

Photo by @junmichaelpark for @nytimes. Jamal Nasiri, 43, is a former agricultural official from Rada'a in south-east Yemen. Jamal left Yemen and has been living in a limbo since 2006, when President Ali Abdullah Saleh won the Yemeni presidential election.
โ €
Saleh was president of the Yemen Arab Republic in the north from 1978 to 1990 and president of modern Yemen after the reunification in 1990. In the wake of the Arab Spring, he was ousted in 2011 after 33 years of dictatorial rule. In 2015, Saleh sided with the Houthis to start the Yemeni Civil War and toppled his successor President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadiโ€™s government, only to switch sides again to his demise in 2017. Bloodshed and instability in Yemen continue to this day.

Photo by @junmichaelpark for @nytimes. Majid, 28, is a Yemeni atheist and secular activist. He withheld his last name because he is wanted in Yemen by the Houthi rebels for his religious and political views. They arrested him and took him to a place where Saudi Arabia frequently bombs, so that if they kill him, they can deflect the blame on the Saudis.
โ €
โ€œI left Yemen because Iโ€™m an atheist. Anybody that I argue with, maybe they can kill me even from the street. Your life is at risk anytime.โ€
โ €
The Yemeni Civil War started in 2015 and developed well beyond a Sunni-Shia conflict into a battlefield for international players, displacing millions of people.
โ €
โ€œThe problem now that we have in Yemen is about religion. Iโ€™m not against Islam, Iโ€™m not against Christianity, Iโ€™m not against anyone. But Iโ€™m against what the religious people do, why they do the religion like this. I think if we have no religion now in Yemen, it will be fineโ€

In June, I visited Jeju Island with NYT's Seoul bureau chiefย Choe Sang-Hun to report on the 500 Yemeni refugees arriving on the resort island. We met a family of 7, a pregnant couple, a computer engineer, an atheist and a journalist who was captured and tortured by armed groups.
โ €
After Majid and other asylum seekers arrived on South Koreaโ€™s Jeju Island, however, animosity, xenophobia and Islamophobia have proliferated on South Koreaโ€™s online forums and portal sites. Anย online petitionย asking President Moon Jae-in to stop taking in asylum seekers has garnered nearly 715,000 signatures, an all-time high record for such a petition.

Photo by @junmichaelpark. Kok Boru is the national sport of Kyrgyzstan. Men on horseback race and compete to carry the carcass of a headless goat weighing 40kg to a goal. The horse riders try to tug the goat from their opponents, the reins between their teeth, or block their routes with the horses. Sometimes they would fall off to the dirt ground. It is rough, and sometimes dangerous, sport. It is like an extreme combination of soccer, polo and rugby.
โ €
It was surreal to watch and document Kok Boru games on the sidelines at the World Nomad Games. Kok Boru was definitely one of the most memorable things from Kyrgyzstan.

Today is my last day in Kyrgyzstan and my coverage of @worldnomadgames is coming to an end. It has been full of action and fun, and I would like to applaud the organizers and volunteers for their hard work.

More than anything, Iโ€™ll cherish the warmth and generosity of Kyrgyz people and all the friendships that I made at the Games. Iโ€™m sure Iโ€™ll return to this beautiful country soon.
