Photos by @junmichaelpark for @voxdotcom. In 2016, Jang Yeo-imโ€™s family was visiting San Francisco from South Korea on a vacation, when their 8-month-old son Jeong-whan fell off the hotel bed. Panicked, Jang and her husband Park Seong-jin called an ambulance and they were taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospitalโ€™s Emergency Room.

Doctors said the baby was fine; he took a short nap, drank some infant formula, and was discharged with a clean bill of health within a few hours. Two years later, the bill arrived: they owed the hospital $18,836, which included the enigmatic โ€œTrauma Activation Feeโ€ of $15,000. South Korea has universal health care, so you can imagine Jangโ€™s surprise when she received the medical bill.

Their story is one of many cases of exorbitant ER fees in America. Since their story ran on Vox, it has been widely shared and generating conversations on so many levels. Even Bernie Sanders shared the story on his Facebook Page.

I am thrilled and honored that my photographs played a role in getting peopleโ€™s attention to this powerful piece of journalism. This is the best case scenario a photojournalist can hope for. Many thanks to @kainazamaria for trusting me on this one. Link in bio.

Room 424: (From left in the front row) Abul Fazl, Amir Ali and Ali Hosseni look around confusedly at Anti-Racist Festival, Athens, Greece, 1 July 2016.. Ali, 28, left Iran when his wife Fateme, 26, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Iranian doctors said nothing could be done because they are Afghans. Fateme is now at a hospital in Athens, but not getting proper care. Abul Fazl, 8, shows unruly behavior and even Amir Ali, just 2 years old, is restless, caught up in the crisis and neglected by their motherโ€™s absence.

On 21 April, 2016, Greek activists occupied Hotel City Plaza in Athens, which had been empty since 2010. Since then, the former three-star hotel with 92 rooms has become a shelter for about 400 refugees. It is estimated that more than 57,000 refugees are stranded in Greece after Greece and Turkey struck a deal in March 2016, and most of them live in sub-human conditions at camps or even on streets.
โ €
The Refugee Hotel is run by volunteers and on individual donations, and the activists want to make a point about the living conditions of stranded refugees. A squat by definition is illegal and temporary. The better living conditions, safety and privacy, nevertheless, made the resident refugees feel human again, however temporarily.
โ €โ €
The refugee issue is complicated and there is no right or easy answer. But instead of reacting on fear based on false information, let us take a moment to think about the people who are affected.

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, 28 Mar 2017: A giant Taegeukgi covers the stands as the players of the South Korean menโ€™s national football team sing the national anthem before the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Asia Qualifier match against Syria at the Seoul World Cup Stadium.
โ €
The 2018 @fifaworldcup kicked off in Russia on Friday. This is South Koreaโ€™s 9th consecutive participation โ€” that is over the span of 36 years. But the expectation is pretty low and hype almost non-existent, as the teamโ€™s performance has been below par. Although Iโ€™m a football fan, even my prediction for South Koreaโ€™s performance in the group stage is two draws and one loss if they are lucky.

Photos by @junmichaelpark for @stern crime. Multiple exposure of the three fathers of the Frog Boys in Daegu, South Korea, September 2017.
โ €
Park Geon-seo, the father of one of the frog boys Park Chan-in, 67, breaks down and reveals his emotion during an interview at his house in Daegu. Twenty seven years have passed since the incident, but the families have not gotten closure from the unresolved case. The fathers were in their 40โ€™s in 1991, but now in their 60โ€™s and 70โ€™s. โ€When your parents die, you bury them in a grave. But when your children die, you bury them in your heart,โ€ said Park. His angst from years of suffering was visible in the moment . Even the interpreter cried after hearing the fathersโ€™ stories.
โ €
The Frog Boys story made me think about the @sewolaftermath and how the Sewol families are still trying to find answers for their childrenโ€™s unaccounted deaths. Four years have passed since the sinking of the Sewol, but the truth-seeking process has barely begun. I really hoped their suffering wouldnโ€™t be prolonged any further like that of the fathers of the Frog Boys.
โ €
As difficult as these stories are, sometimes stories find me and I do what I can to document and tell them to a larger audience. This particular assignment afforded me a rare creative freedom to trace back the painful memories from 27 years ago and tell the heartbreaking stories of these fathers. Many thanks to @soerenk78 and the photo editor Trixi Rossi for the collaboration.

Photos by @junmichaelpark for @stern crime. Waryong Mountain in Daegu is only 299.6 meters high, but its perimeters are very wide. It is a neighborhood mountain easily accessible and frequented by locals, which made the Frog Boy incident all the more shocking.
โ €
The neighborhood of Seongseo, where the frog boys came from, is on the outskirts of Daegu, but now is fully developed with residential apartment complexes and little remaining from 27 years ago. In September 2002, the boysโ€™ bodies were found at the foot of the mountain, only 200 meters away from a nearby school. And the families hold a ritual at the burial site on March 26th of every year. The date of their missing became the date of their death.
โ €
The statue of limitations for the case expired in March, 2006, 15 years after their missing, but the families are still grappling with so many unanswered questions.

In September 2017, German writer @soerenk78 and I set out to Daegu and talked to three fathers of the Frog Boys. The five children went missing in 1991 after going up to a nearby mountain in Daegu to catch salamanders. There was a nationwide search for years to no avail, and their bodies mysteriously turned up in 2002 at the foot of the mountain; it was later determined that they were murdered.

This March marked the 27th year anniversary since the boys went missing and the case still remains unresolved. Unable to find closure, the fathers are broken and dependent on alcohol. Their heartbreaking story ran in the April 2018 issue of Germanyโ€™s Stern Crime over 13 pages with my photographs. Iโ€™ll post some photos from the story in the coming days.
