Pam and Roy are back for a herding demonstration at our annual Wool Frolic! Come at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to learn about the basics of #herding.
Why use #ducks to demonstrate herding #sheep? Because they are used by shepherds to teach dogs how to herd sheep. And we can teach you, too!
Other lessons include #carding #crochet #knitting and #sewing

Some views of this year's volunteer appreciation dinner. Many thanks to our dedicated volunteer community who help with very nearly every aspect of the daily operations of Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum. This world class museum would not be here without you.

The Tin Shop is the latest of many places and spaces that have been getting prettied up with new coats of paint this summer. Thank you to all of our volunteers and staff who make this museum such a treasure!

On Friday, staff members did an experiment in teaching basic herding skills with the help of Roy (the white drake) and Pam (the brown duck). It took a little practice, but they got the hang of it. Some eager visitors got to try, too! It gave them a good appreciation for shepherds who hone the natural herding instincts of their sheep dogs to gather prey animals like sheep and ducks to one place, such as a pen.
Try your hand at herding ducks like Pam and Roy at the Wool Frolic on September 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

We still have room for a few craft vendors at the upcoming Wool Frolic which takes place on Saturday, September 15th! This is a great opportunity if you are a craftsperson either new or established. The event runs 10am-4pm, is outdoors and you need to be selling fiber related items (knitted, crocheted, sewn or woven). The cost for a space is $45. Interested? You can message or contact the museum.
Sable got to spend some time with his owner, Barb, today. She is a newer volunteer and she is excited to integrate Sable's training with the history of the museum. He is half Jersey, a quarter Holstein, and a quarter Milking Shorthorn. He is 4 years old, which is the age he officially becomes an ox, instead of a working steer. She has been training him since he was 1 day old and you can tell there's a mutual affection between them. She has a one-ox cart that she'll use with him and she looks forward to teaching visitors about the history of oxen in early America.
If you have an interest in working with oxen, Barb is eager to train people of all skill levels in the care and handling of these animals. Contact volunteer coordinator Jayne Westley at 717-569-0401 ext. 201 or c-jwestley@pa.gov with your interest and questions.
It's a beautiful day for plein air painting. Come see this artist's creation as he's working!
