London Independent Photography has been facilitating the meeting & collaboration of photographers for more than thirty years. We produce fLIP Magazine @flipmaglondon three times a year, and today held free portfolio reviews, with a leaning toward younger members of the photographic community who rarely get the chance to discuss their work. With a nod to our next issue with the theme ‘Youth’. You can submit work for consideration until 31st May.

Let us help each other cross all boundaries to create together, regardless of age, gender or ethnicity. .

Hiraeth - A sense of belonging.

This beautiful image forms part of a mini-feature in the latest issue of our fLIP Magazine. The photographer Kathryn Alkin uses intentional camera movement to help convey her overlapping visits to her mother who is in a care home: the subtle movements evoking different moods. Kathryn says she wants to express something of the untranslatable Welsh word, hiraeth: a sense of belonging; a yearning for a home or time you can’t return to, and also an admiration for the beauty of the Conwy estuary. .

Free Portfolio Reviews - appealing to younger non-members and all members!
11 - 3, Saturday 4th May at On Road, 17a Old Nicol St, E2 7HR

There will be a Portfolio Review event to be held to encourage LIP members and young people to select and submit their images to the next issue of fLIP on the theme of Youth. Nevertheless, the reviewers will be happy to look over your portfolio regardless of whether or not you have work that falls within that theme.

Simply bring along a selection of images that you feel best represents your current photographic interests and aspirations. Part of the idea behind this event is to show the very wide range of interests and approaches of our members who may not have had this sort of opportunity to view and share work before.

The reviewers are:

Zelda Cheatle - Curator and Editor of Photography
Paul Halliday - Photographer, Film-maker and Urbanist
Amanda Eatwell - fLIP Editor and professional photographer

There are thirty slots allocated for reviews lasting 15 minutes each. Nobody will know in advance who their review will be with.

As well as the more formal reviews there will be lots of opportunity for peer-reviews, and discussion amongst other participants.

DM for details on signing up.
