“Until a man duplicates a blade of grass, nature can laugh at his so called scientific knowledge. LESSER SAND PLOVER @ Jamnagar, Gujarat, India - Jan 2013

This chunky plover is long-legged and long-billed. Breeding males have grey backs and white underparts. The breast, forehead and nape are chestnut, and there is a black eye mask. The female is duller, and winter and juvenile birds lack the chestnut, apart from a hint of rofous on the head. Legs are dark and the bill black.

In all plumages, this species is very similar to the greater sand plover. Separating the species may be straightforward in mixed wintering flocks on an Indian beach, where the difference in size and structure is obvious; it is more difficult to identify a lone vagrant to western Europe, where both species are very rare. The problem is compounded in that the Middle Eastern race of greater sand plover is the most similar to the lesser. The lesser usually has darker legs, a white forehead, and a more even white wing bar than the greater.

The lesser sand plover's feeds on insects, crustaceans and annelid worms, which are obtained by a run-and-pause technique, rather than the steady probing of some other wader groups. This species takes fewer steps and shorter pauses than the greater sand plover when feeding.

The flight call is a hard trill.

CRAB-PLOVER @ Jamnagar, Gujarat, India - Jan 2013
The crab-plover or crab plover -This bird resembles a plover, but has very long grey legs and a strong heavy black bill similar to a tern, Its black-and-white plumage and long-necked upright posture with heavy bill makes it distinctive and unmistakable. Its bill is unique among waders, and specialised for eating crabs. It has partially webbed toes. The plumage is white except for black on its back and in the primary feathers of the wings. They are noisy birds, calling frequently on their breeding sites and in their wintering grounds. The usual call is a ka similar to that of the bar-tailed godwit but repeated rapidly. Flocks may produce a whinnying sound that rises and at in the breeding season produce whistling kew-ki-ki notes.
Males and females are not easily distinguished but males have a heavier and longer bill. Juveniles have the black on the mantle, greyish and remain in this plumage for a year. Flocks fly in lines or "V" formations.

Grey-headed Lapwing @ Kaziranga, Assam, India - Feb 2017
The grey-headed lapwing is a lapwing species which breeds in northeast China and Japan. The mainland population winters in northern Southeast Asia from northeastern India to Cambodia. The Japanese population winters, at least partially, in southern Honshū.

The grey-headed lapwing has a grey head and neck, darker grey breast band and white belly. The back is brown, the rump is white and the tail is black. This is a striking species in flight, with black primaries, white under wings and upper wing secondaries, and brown upper wing coverts.

Adults of both sexes are similarly plumaged, but males are slightly larger than females. Young birds have the white areas of plumage tinged with grey, a less distinct breast band, and pale fringes to the upperpart and wing covert feathers. The call of the Grey-headed Lapwing is a sharp chee-it.

This species nests from April to July in wet grassland, rice fields and marshland edges. It winters in similar habitat and is then gregarious. It feeds in shallow water on insects, worms and molluscs.

Northen Lapwing @ Kaziranga, Assam, India - Feb 2017.
.
The northern lapwing is a long bird with rounded wings and a crest. It is also the shortest-legged of the lapwings. It is mainly black and white, but the back is tinted green. The male has a long crest and a black crown, throat and breast contrasting with an otherwise white face. Females and young birds have shorter crests, and have less strongly marked heads, but plumages are otherwise quite similar.
This is a vocal bird in the breeding season, with constant calling as the crazed tumbling display flight is performed by the male. The typical contact call is a loud, shrill "pee-wit" from which they get their other name of peewit. Displaying males usually make a wheezy "pee-wit, wit wit, eeze wit" during their display flight, these birds also make squeaking or mewing sounds.
It feeds primarily on insects and other small invertebrates. This species often feeds in mixed flocks with golden plovers and black-headed gulls, the latter often robbing the two plovers, but providing a degree of protection against predators.
Like the golden plovers, this species prefers to feed at night when there is moonlight.
The northern lapwing is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.

RED-WATTLED LAPWING @ Jamnagar, Gujarat, India -  Jan 2013
.
....In continuation of my previous post.......The diet of the lapwing includes a range of insects, snails and other invertebrates, mostly picked from the ground. They may also feed on some grains. They feed mainly during the day but they may also feed at night. They may sometimes make use of the legs to disturb insect prey.

.
The red-wattled lapwing is a lapwing or large plover, a wader in the family Charadriidae. It has characteristic loud alarm calls which are variously rendered as did-he-do-it or pity-to-do-it leading to colloquial names like the did-he-do-it bird. Usually seen in pairs or small groups not far from water but may form large flocks in the non-breeding season.

Red-wattled lapwings are large waders, about 35 cm long. The wings and back are light brown with a purple sheen, but head and chest and front part of neck are black. Prominently white patch runs between these two colours, from belly and tail, flanking the neck to the sides of crown. Short tail is tipped black. A red fleshy wattle in front of each eye, black-tipped red bill, and the long legs are yellow. In flight, prominent white wing bars formed by the white on the secondary coverts. Its striking appearance is supplemented by its noisy nature, with a loud and scolding did-he-do-it call, often uttered at night.

DEMOISELLE CRANE @ Jamnagar, Gujarat, India - Feb 2013
..... in continuation of my previous post..... The Demoiselle Crane lives in a variety of different environments, including desert areas and numerous types of grasslands (flodded, mountain, temperate, and tropical grassland) which are often within afew hundred metres of streams or lakes. However, when nesting, they prefer patchy areas of vegetation which is tall enough to conceal them and their nests, yet short enough to allow them look out for predators whilst incubating their eggs.
Demoiselle Cranes have to take one of the toughest migrations in the world. In late Augusy through September, they gather in flocks of up to 400 individuals and prepare for their flight to their winter range. During the migratory flight south, demoiselles fly like all cranes, with their head and neck straight forward and their feet andlegs straight behind, reaching altitudes of 16,000 - 26,000 feet. Along their arduous journey they have to cross the Himalayan mountains to get to their over-wintering grounds in India. Many die from fatigue, hunger and predation from golden eagles. Simpler, lower routes ate possible, such as crossing the range via the Khyber Pass. However, their presently preferred route has been hard-wired by countless cycles of mygration. At their wintering grounds, demoiselles have been observed flocking with common cranes, their combined totals reaching up to 20,000 individuals. Demoiselles maintain separate social groups within the large flock. In March and April, they begin their long spring journey back to their northern nesting grounds.

BROWN FISH OWL @ Kaziranga, Assam, India - Feb 2017.
This species is a large owl, but it is intermediate in size between other fish owls. Some of the variability is attributed to the range of sizes across the subspecies. Also, females are inveriably at least somewhat latger than males. It has prominent ear tufts but as in all fish owls, their tufts hang to the side of tge head and have a scraggly look. The upperparts are rufous brown and heavily streaked with black or dark brown. The under parts are buffy-fulvous to whitish, with wavy dark brown streaks and finer brown barring. The throat is white and can be conspicuously puffed, while the facial disk is indistinct. The irides are golden yellow, the feet a dulleryellow, and the bill is dark. Sexes do not differ in appearance except for size.

OSPREY @ Sunderban, West Bengal, India - Feb 2017 -
The Osprey is a medium raptor. It is brown on the upperparts and predominantly greyish on the head and underparts. As the common name suggests (fish eagle/sea hawk/river hawk/fish hawk) the osprey's diet consists almost exclusively of fish. Occasionally, the osprey may prey on rodents, rabbits, hares, amphibians, other birds and small reptiles. The osprey has several adaptations that suit its piscivorous lifestyle; reversible outer toes; sharp spicules; closable nostrils to keep out water during dives, and backwards-facing scales on the talons which act as barbs to help hold its fish. It also has dense plumage which is oily and prevents its feathers from getting waterlogged.

PALLAS'S FISH EAGLE @ Kaziranga, Assam, India - Feb 2017 - The conservation status of Pallas's fish eagle is VULNERABLE, with a population of about 2,500 to 10,000 remaining.Besides direct persecution, humans contribute to the decline of the species through habitat degradation, pollution, and draining or overfishing lakes. In India, the eagle is also threatened by the spread of water hyacinth which spread over lakes and make finding prey difficult. The large range is deceptive, as Pallas's fish eagle is rare and isolated throughout its territory and may not breed in large areas of it.
