The 80/20 rule (otherwise known as the Pareto principle) is a rule that states 20% of an activity generally produces the majority of positive results.

This rule applies to strength training and business alike β€” albeit in different ways.

80/20 applies differently to strength than it does to business and I will explain how the concept is applied two different ways:

In STRENGTH training coach Louie Simmons and his gym Westside Barbell (considered the strongest gym in the world) observed the 80/20 rule in the optimal training program Louie has developed over decades.

At Westside 20% of the exercises are classical lift compound movements (Squat, Bench, Deadlift) and 80% are accessory exercises.

True it is the heavy lifts like squatting, bench pressing and deadlifting that force the most adaptation in your body and give you the biggest strength gains.

However the 80% of higher rep accessory work should not be neglected for more big lifts because accessory work is important too.

Simply put: Accessory work works.

You're only as strong as your weakest link so make sure to put in the many reps it takes to build your tendons and ligaments if you want to maximize your strength and avoid injury when you are lifting heavy.
