Latest #photoassignment is a bit chilly. Getting out of #Dunedin last night on the #F800GSA. #RobSuisted #naturespicimages #naturespic #RobSuistedPhotography
Molesworth Station trout fishing. Shot this frame for the Molesworth Station Book that Harry Broad and I worked together on.
A culmination of a lot of hard work, sadly, many people these days expect this to be a photoshop merge. It isn't!
While Malcolm Bell was working hard to catch a trout (he had to give up on his fly rod and revert to spinning which I understand is a bit of a come down for a fly fisher), I was trying hard to figure out how to photographically overcome the terrible overcast backlit windy evening. I gave up and went and got my underwater equipment - screwing on 2 strobe lights - one for a fish and one to light Malcolm, and was almost ready when Malcolm finally caught this young trout.
Someone was looking down on us, as a crepuscular ray of sunlight poked through the cloud just at the right time - and this frame was born. It that took a lot of travelling, a few nights away from home, a lot of equipment, good planning, and just a bit of luck.
The photo was used full page in our award winning book (Molesworth), and also used on the cover of trout fishing licences and regulations booklet that year. Very pleased with it.

Tawa tree forest green. Love the texture and duotone quality of this frame, deep in Pureora rainforest. Makes me feel at home when I see it.

Taken on my medium format pentax 645z dSLR, I suspect many lesser cameras would have struggled to do this justice. The fine detail in the original is beautiful.

Enjoying this shot immensely at the moment. Auckland's stunningly wild west coast at dawn. The softness of blue tones, the hardness of topography, in a fluid. Image ID: 59113

Had a blast as an artist at #WOMADNZ this year.

I'd been a speaker at the Taranaki Arts Festival last year, and the director of WOMAD, who had been in the audience, signed me up for WOMAD there and then. I said I couldn't believe I was cool enough - but she assured me I was.

So my performance was a bit about my life and work, and the work on the Molesworth Station book, and more recently, being entrusted to document the 50th anniversary of Country Calendar - the 2nd oldest running TV programme in the world. As we all know #countrycalendar is a true #Kiwi #icon, and it was thoroughly enjoyable explaining to a big crowd how I went about tackling the subject, and individual stories. The talk seemed to be well received, and to my delight, several folks volunteered that it was the highlight of their #WOMADNZ2018 - that's a huge honour, thanks.

Here I'm on stage telling a story from a high country merino sheep muster on the remote Branches Station, as part of the book shoot. The manager here had once had a dog slip and fall into a rocky ravine and injure itself (this photo shows him trying to find a safe path through steep country for his dogs). While waiting for the helicopter to fly in to take his dog to the vet, he spotted a gold nugget in the creek that ended up paying for the helicopter, the vet and enough left over to make 2 wedding rings.

Part of the #photoassignment for #NZGeographic magazine on land management in NZ, I filmed this stubble burn off in #Canterbury. While it looks bad, the release of carbon by this short fire only hastens the carbon released over the next year, and allows the farmer to plant fine seeded crops straight away into a sterile field. I learnt that 65% of the whole world's carrot seed was grown in this area, and 5% on this farm alone - high value cropping from #precisionagriculture - with carefully monitored inputs and outputs. Grab a copy of the magazine in store or have a browse free at nzgeo.com to see more about land management issues.

Back on #photoassignment for #NZGeo magazine, in stinking hot MacKenzie Country. Had the #F800GSA down here 6 months back in -5 degrees celsius, a nice change! Check out the next issue for results

History of a signature frame part 1 of 3

This photo of a #karearea #NZFalcon was taken on #photoassignment for @NZGeo a few moons back. It's become a signature image of mine, thanks to the kind support and help of Noel and Debbie at Wingspan Birds of Prey Trust. #NZGeo needed a last minute dramatic frame to really capture the character of these birds. The outcome, I believe, was the first photo to ever do our only native falcon justice. I was proud of the result as you can see on part 2 of this.

History of a signature frame part 2

So the outcome of the #photoassignment was a cover image, and also a stunning double page spread of the image in 1/3. To capture this 'fighter jet' of the bird world in crisp focus, but to present those sharp formidible talons, in such a dynamic way, was a huge highlight.
Later that year, the magazine won 'The Maggies' - magazine cover of the year. Nice bonus outcom. But possibly the best accolade was to come.... #naturespicimages #robsuistedphotography #NewZealand #NZFalcon #Karearea #NZGeo #storybehind
