History of a signature frame part 1 of 3

This photo of a #karearea #NZFalcon was taken on #photoassignment for @NZGeo a few moons back. It's become a signature image of mine, thanks to the kind support and help of Noel and Debbie at Wingspan Birds of Prey Trust. #NZGeo needed a last minute dramatic frame to really capture the character of these birds. The outcome, I believe, was the first photo to ever do our only native falcon justice. I was proud of the result as you can see on part 2 of this.

History of a signature frame part 2

So the outcome of the #photoassignment was a cover image, and also a stunning double page spread of the image in 1/3. To capture this 'fighter jet' of the bird world in crisp focus, but to present those sharp formidible talons, in such a dynamic way, was a huge highlight.
Later that year, the magazine won 'The Maggies' - magazine cover of the year. Nice bonus outcom. But possibly the best accolade was to come.... #naturespicimages #robsuistedphotography #NewZealand #NZFalcon #Karearea #NZGeo #storybehind

History of a signature frame part 3

If you've read the previous 2 parts, you'll know how this image came into being. Perhaps the most satisfying use to date is as a memorial to a human being, committed to skin. I was contacted by a gentlemen who wanted to celebrate his brother's life, and asked if he could tattoo the image on his body. This was the result. Humbling to have work used in a memorial like this. Thank you.

My latest book is due any day. Still get a huge buzz seeing the advance copy despite a few books under the belt so far.

I'd LOVE to share my heart felt preface with you below. It won't all fit, so overhang will go into the comments at end.

#NZbook #NewZealandBook #NewZealandBookRobSuisted #NZBookRobSuisted #photographicbook #newbookalert #newbooks

My preface: “One hundred and seventy-five years ago, my ancestor, sea captain Charles Suisted (Sjöstedt), left Scandinavia for New Zealand. He spent a few years in Wellington before constant earthquake aftershocks drove him and his family south to be the first European settlers in North Otago. His 1848 Swedish-inspired stables, New Zealand’s second-oldest farm building, still stand at Goodwood, where he farmed 200,000 acres.
I wonder at Charles’ drive to leave a perfectly good country and established family to travel to the end of the world, and the primitive wilds of New Zealand, to take on such a huge project. I wonder at the hardships and opportunities he experienced. I wonder at the New Zealand he saw. He must have loved the place.
And, I wonder how this history has shaped me. My inner wanderlust for the special wild places of the world is strong. New Zealand easily satisfies that urge, with stunning locations and new beautiful sights easily won. After travels around the world, from the Arctic to the Antarctic, I know New Zealand has the densest concentration of beautiful natural history on the globe – it oozes from our land.
It’s that ooze, or essence, I want to share with you in this book. Photography gives me a practical connection to the things I’m passionate about. It makes me present and intimate with our world, our environment and our seasons. It’s a meditation and it makes me happy.
Photography also provides a conduit for me to extend my passion to you. So, please, I wish to tempt you to share my love through these pages. Here is a select distillation from 60,000 images taken from my wanders, inviting you to fall in love with our whenua, our land..... Overhang of preface in comments below...

I shot this frame in the red zone on #photoassignment for @nzgeo. With special permission from Civil Defence to camp out in the red zone, I was looking for unique photos around the Papatea fault uplift. Amongst the stillness of the closed zone, I found the railway lights still glowing in the darkness - eerie in a post-apocalyptic kind of way. I set out to make an image feel like a rollercoaster ride into the darkness, just as this terrifyingly powerful standing wave of the #eqnz was. Using the #jeep headlights and other light sources I set out to light the scene – paying attention to creating a shadow under the right hand track, to show the levitation – without this shadow the image didn’t work. Yellow spray paint shows the actual faultine, marked by GNS geologists.
The result was a double page spread in the feature (free at www.nzgeo.com/stories/in-the-wake-of-the-quake/), and a finalist in the prestigous #CanonMediaAwards this year.
