The inception of the EM specialty - 50 years ago saw the first meeting of the Casualty Surgeons Association, held on 12th October 1962. It was Chaired by Maurice Ellis, one of the first #emergencymedicine Consultants.
Here is a memory of Maurice from W.H Rutherford, an EM Consultant in Belfast.

Before the inception of the EM specialty 50 years ago, there were very few textbooks specifically for A&E Medicine for medics to refer to. Maurice Ellis' handbook was one of the first! Now there are a huge variety of Emergency Medicine textbooks like our Vice President Chris Moulton's Emergency Medicine Lecture Notes. EM really has come a long way!

The Platt Report was instrumental in the development of the emergency medicine specialty.
Sir Harry Platt, the chairman of the Accident and Emergency Services Sub-Committee of the Standing Medical Advisory Committee, produced the famous report in 1962.
Some of it still rings true today....
