Merry Christmas!
It was a privilege to carry the legislation to honor SSG Ricardo "Ricky Barraza" & his family with a Memorial Highway dedication on Highway 43.
Assemblymember Salas Holds Highway Dedication Ceremony for Fallen Soldier

SHAFTER – Today, Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) held a memorial highway dedication ceremony and official sign unveiling with the Barraza family, Shafter Mayor Gilbert Alvarado, Shafter Police Chief Kevin Zimmerman and other community leaders in honor and memory of the late Army Staff Sergeant Ricardo “Ricky” Barraza.  In 2017, Salas authored Assembly Concurrent Resolution (ACR) 70 to designate the portion of State Route 43 that runs through the city of Shafter as the Staff Sergeant Ricardo “Ricky” Barraza Memorial Highway. “Seeing the sign bearing the name of Staff Sergeant Ricardo ‘Ricky’ Barraza put up along the highway is a significant, solemn and moving moment for our community and for the Barraza family. It stands as a permanent tribute to SSG. Barraza's service, bravery and ultimate sacrifice. I am deeply humbled and grateful to honor his memory and to dedicate this highway to Staff Sergeant Barraza. My heart and prayers are with his family and all those who have lost loved ones in service to our country.” Born May 31, 1981, Barraza attended Shafter High School, where he excelled in athletics, playing basketball, football and track. After graduating in 1999, he enlisted in the United States Army and dedicated his life to serving his country.
Barraza achieved the position of squad leader and was assigned 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Lewis, Washington.  He was a six-time veteran of the Global War on Terrorism, deploying three times in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and was on his third deployment in support of Iraqi Freedom.  He was tragically killed by small-arms fire March 18, 2006 in Ramadi, Iraq at the age of 24. “The day has finally arrived and I am so elated that the SSG. Barraza Memorial Highway signs are finally up.  I still can't believe that we made it happen,” said Mariana Sobolewski, a close friend of the Barraza family and Air Force veteran. “It definitely represents a culminat
