B Prabha made a mark on the Indian art scene when there were few women in this field. Rural women engaged in daily chores, perhaps inspired by her native village of Bela near Nagpur, formed the thematic basis of her oeuvre. She developed her own distinct style, working mainly in oils. .

The elongated, almost regal form, typical of her rendering of female figures, is instantly recognisable in this work. A demure, yet elegant poise defines Prabha's women, who exude a sense of solitude even when they are in groups. Prabha's work, painted with a carefully modulated palette, speaks volumes about the interiority of women's lives.

This work by Satish Gujral is a result of the artist's experiments with burnt wood-a medium he grew fascinated with after seeing the multi-hued embers emerge from a burning log of wood. Intrigued by the possibilities of sooty wood, he created sculptural forms with this material-often abstract representations of deities-interspersed with vermillion and gold colours. .

S H Raza, In a Forest, Circa 1940s.

This watercolour by Raza belonged to the collection of the late Emmanuel Schlesinger. He was an influential patron of Indian art in the post-Independence years, and is credited, frequently alongside Rudolf von Leyden and Walter and Kathe Langhammer, with having encouraged and mentored many artists of the Progressive Artists' Group during their early years. Many of these relationships developed into lifelong friendships, which played an important role in leading the Indian Modernists to be appreciated on European shores.

Ganesh Pyne’s art is deeply personal and emerges from memories and images drawn from mythology, private dreams, and personal tragedies. At several points during his career, Pyne returned to the Mahabharata, which held a deep fascination for him.
This rendition of Draupadi was part of the Mahabharata theme he painted. In his unique interpretations of the epic, he focussed on the protagonists as well as peripheral characters. The bright palette and frontal pose hint at folk art elements and present a variation on Pyne’s more typical play of darkness and shadow.

A A Raiba, Untitled, 1982
.

A A Raiba drew inspiration from the charming coastal fishing villages of his native Konkan community. This painting exudes a sense of stillness in its portrayal of a moored ship watched by a solitary crane. Rendered in Raiba’s favoured earth tones, it suggests the calm that prevails at sunset after a day of fishing out at sea. The artist was known for his use of jute as the surface for his oil paintings, which he preferred over canvas owing to its availability and cost.

This watercolour was painted by Amrita Sher-Gil in 1923, when she was just ten years old. It is based on the German fairy tale The Goose Girl, first published in 1815 by the Brothers Grimm.
.

The story follows the journey of a princess and her chambermaid, during which the princess is forced to dismount her horse and fetch water from a stream to quench her thirst – the scene Sher-Gil chose to portray. It progresses into a tale of deception, following the “false bride” plot, with truth ultimately victorious.
.

Sher-Gil, who displayed a prodigious talent for art from early childhood, was known to fill sketchbooks with drawings and watercolours often based on cinema and literature, of which this work is a fine example.
.

This 'Untitled' work by Amrita Sher-Gil goes under the hammer at our upcoming Evening Sale on 20 September 2018 in New Delhi. .

Bhupen Khakhar, Sea View from Marina Resort, 1999
.

Bhupen Khakhar is best known for his bold, vibrant works based on personal experiences. Khakhar, however, was equally adept at landscapes. This serene watercolour work portrays a rocky beach fringed by palm trees, with a boat swaying on the blue ocean waves. .

In addition to the title and artist’s signature, the painting bears the inscription “Mauritius” in Gujarati. It is quite likely that this gentle rendering of the sand and the sea is based on his visit to the country.
