HAPPY HALLOWEEN! VE VANT YOU TO HAVE CLEAN TEETH!

Dr Divian Patel, following from the popularity of last week's post, shares some more tips for you and your family so that you can maintain good oral care this Halloween:

1. CAREFULLY SELECT YOUR CANDY.

Beware of hard candy such as lollipops and taffy. The longer length of time that candy is in the mouth, the greater the risk of tooth decay. Another type of candy to avoid is those that stick to teeth such as gummy bears and candy corn. It can be hard for you or your little ones to clean that goo in those hard to reach areas. Sugar free candy can be a good compromise because it's still sweet but has lower sugar content so consider these.

2. AVOID DRINKING OR GIVING YOUR KIDS SUGARY DRINKS.

Although its wise to avoid these drinks all year around, Halloween warrants a special reminder because it is a time of indulgence. Although kids may love these drinks, they are one of the most common causes of tooth decay. Consider giving your family, fluoridated water instead, this can help prevent cavities.

3. TRY AND EAT YOUR CANDY WITH YOUR MEALS.

During mealtimes or afterwards, production of salvia increases. Saliva neutralises acids produced by bacteria in your mouth and helps rinse away food particles. So its best to eat candy during lunch or dinner.

4.HAVE A REGULAR CLEAN AND CHECK UP AT THE DENTIST.

Although brushing and flossing are essential to keep your teeth clean, you should schedule regular check ups and annual cleanings. This can help prevent gum disease and tooth loss.
