A family concentration camp is still a concentration camp.
•
In my freshman political science seminar, we learned about a concept called the Overton Window. The #OvertonWindow holds all ideas that are considered normal. Agreeable. Acceptable. The further outside of the window you go, to the left or right, the ideas get more radical. Extreme. Unthinkable.
•
Everyone from political strategists to real estate agents-like y’alls president-is obsessed with the idea of moving the window-so that the things they really want to happen no longer seem extreme.
•
How do you move the #OvertonWindow? You suggest something so far to the extreme, that the slightly less extreme alternative suddenly seems more acceptable to the public.
•
Moving the Overton Window can be used for good: Malcolm X intentionally presented himself as an extremist in certain respects, so white moderates would accept Dr. King as the reasonable one, even though they didn’t want to.
•
But there is a very real possibility, perhaps a probability, that this administration has been moving the Overton Window since they started campaigning. All of the tweets, the rallies, the antics, the previously unthinkable behaviors are the extreme. Now? A tax cut that hurts the poor and middle class, moves against health care, and yes, detention centers that keep families together-are suddenly thought to be preferable alternatives.
•
Lying and Gaslighting are tools of this strategy: Sec. Nielsen telling us that the administration’s policy was not actually to separate the families we watched them separate with our own eyes.
•
So is distraction: tweets on tweets on tweets, calling this TV star a failure and that dictator short and fat.
•
THIS IS THE TRICK OF THE ENEMY. DO NOT FALL FOR IT.
•
The executive order signed to keep families together STILL upholds a Zero Tolerance policy that destroys people seeking a better life, fleeing harm and persecution. A FAMILY concentration camp is STILL a concentration camp. #Trump did not end his Zero Tolerance policy-he merely moved the window, from the most extreme to slightly less.

STAY WOKE. KEEP FIGHTING
This World Refugee Day feels especially significant. All of us can play a role in resettling refugee families in our own hometowns. If you agree that we should build bigger tables, not taller walls, join @amnestyusa’s #LongerTable Initiative at http://bit.ly/LongerTable (link also in bio)

Some FACTS:
We are in the worst refugee crisis in recorded history; there are 22.5M refugees worldwide.
More than half of these refugees are children.
More than half of the world's refugees are hosted by only 10 countries and most do not have adequate resources, leaving many to survive on less than 50 cents per day.
America's refugee resettlement infrastructure was created by Ronald Reagan and some of the most powerful resettlement communities are in Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, etc... red states! This should not be a partisan issue but a human issue.
Refugees are not criminals and are, relatedly, highly vetted. They do not get to choose their destination and are only seeking to protect their families and simply be part of a safe community again. #AmnestyInternational 📷 @icp

For every misguided human who has been lied to by leaders and/or every dip shit saying “if you knowingly commit a crime you deserve HELL” also known as the stains on humanity and history that are internment camps ... SEEKING ASYLUM HAS NEVER BEFORE BEEN ILLEGAL.
•
Parents are entering through PREVIOUSLY LEGAL CHANNELS and being turned away because of this barbaric Trump policy. End. Of. Story. They are losing their children. And then being sent (in some already reported cases) to die. And if you don’t care ... I just ... I do not want to know you. I will not give you any of the square footage of my heart. Party bullshit aside. This. Is. Monstrous.

If you cannot agree that babies aren’t bargaining chips for misguided walls that a campaign SWORE that SOMEONE ELSE would pay for!? I. Just. Cannot. Image via @glennondoyle
I have been in tears for days. Looking at these images. Reading about guards in these internment camps refusing to allow caged children to hold each other. Kids as young as 2, sobbing, with no one to console them. That does lasting psychological damage to children. As does being ripped from their parents arms, some so young they are still breastfeeding. There have to be some nonnegotiables in our society. Human rights violations like these should be one. Using children as bargaining chips? No

“FACTS:
.
1. More than 2,000 children have been separated from their mothers & fathers since April, more than 100 under the age of four. They are held in tents, big box stores, & warehouses converted into detention facilities. Family separation can cause children “irreparable harm,” stated the American Association of Pediatricians.
.
2. The Trump administration claims it is enforcing the law. This is false. *SEEKING ASYLUM HAS NEVER BEEN ILLEGAL.* It initiated a zero-tolerance policy in April to prosecute all undocumented migrants as criminals & separate them from their children -- as a deterrent. The administration has no plan to reunite families it has separated. It has the power to stop this policy at anytime.
.
3. The U.S. has a long history of separating families of color, taking Native American & black children from their parents. Here's the truth: Lawmakers can only secure the popular support for such brutal policies if the targets are already seen as less than human. The current administration has primed us to see migrants at the border as "animals," "criminals," & "rapists." Once you strip a people of their humanity, you can do anything to them. Including take away their children.
.
4. But we can insist on seeing migrants not as criminals but as mothers, fathers, sons, daughters seeking a different life. They don't have documentation. That's a civil violation, not a criminal one. It does not deserve state-sanctioned torture. We can stop this.” .

Protest. Protest. Then protest some more. Fight like hell for your values and for what you know is right. #FamiliesBelongTogether (DONATION LINK IN BIO)

Your first brush with science happened here: a sperm met an egg and sparks flew. 💥💥💥⠀
⠀
The human egg cell accumulates some 20 billion zinc atoms in the 12 hours before ovulation, likely to signal the egg to stop maturing as it readies for a sperm. ⠀
⠀
When that sperm comes along, it triggers calcium increase in the egg and prompts the first in a series of "zinc sparks", as billions of zinc atoms are released back out of the egg. Bound to small probe molecules placed by researchers at Northwestern, the zinc showers are captured here as a breathtaking firework of fluorescence, the first time they’ve ever been visible in a human cell.⠀
⠀
So when you call your Dad later to wish him a happy father's day, say thanks for the zinc sparks. ✨🤓⠀

My Proud Papa. How lucky I am to be your daughter. To have been raised by you. To have had your support to fall back on when I’ve learned lessons the hard way, and to have you cheering and shouting “I KNEW you could do this!” when I’ve succeeded too. You are insightful. Artistic. Tender. And tough. I am so grateful for the deep friendship that has become our adult relationship. I’m so lucky to have a champion like you. And just because it’s your day I’ll admit JUST this once ... every time you’ve given me your opinion about men — and aperture settings too! — you’ve been right dammit. Like I said, slow learner 😜 Love you Daddio. You’re the tops! #NumberOneDad
