Our #absolute #favorite #beach of all the Sri Lanka #beaches we’ve seen is called Dalawella beach. It’s a clean, #white #sanded #beach with #palms leaning over the #water. Don’t be #surprised when you will see the 3little 3turtle heads pop up out of the #sea at the end of the #day. The #coral reef in front of the beach forms a #natural #swimming #pool where you can take a swim.

Sections of this vast #complex #overlooking the #Jaffna #lagoon have been recently restored, though much #work continues. Once one of the #greatest #Dutch #forts in #Asia, it was built in 1680 over an earlier #Portuguese #original, and defensive triangles were added in 1792 to produce the #classic Vaubanesque star form.
.
Jaffna's fort has been fought over for #centuries. Today you're free to explore its walls, admire its gateways and moats, study some exhibits and view the city from its ramparts.

#Kalutara Bodhiya is an old #Bodhi #tree which is identified as one of the 32 saplings of Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi which was #planted during the reign of #king Devanampiyatissa in the 2nd #century BC at #Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. According to #ancient chronicle #Sinhala Bodhiwamsa, 32 saplings of sacred figs, which were sprouted from Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, were planted in various parts of the country as instructed by Arahant Mahinda Thera. Further the chronicle states that this Bodhi tree existed intact till the 15th century.

Today we had an interesting #tour around the #temple of the tooth. It’s a palace in kandy and it houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha and is one of the holiest shrines in the #Buddhist world and a UNESCO world #Heritage site. We enjoyed #learning about the #history of the temple and offered some water lily flowers as an offering.

Perched at the #southern edge of the #Hill #Country, On a #clear #day you can view the #south coast from this ridge, and at night the #Hambantota #lighthouse pulses in the #distance. On a not-so-clear day, #great swaths of mist cling #magnetically to the #hillsides. Either way, it’s a #spectacular part of the country.
.
The scruffy #town centre is a dusty ribbon of #traffic, three-wheelers and small-scale #commerce. But take a short walk and you’ll be rewarded with #extraordinary #views. The #railway #hugs one side of the ridge in a minor victory for 19th-century engineering.

A #morning to #remember. #Watching the #sun rise over #Sigiriya’s Lion Rock and the thick #jungle that extends for kilometres. One of those mornings where the #world seems so #beautiful that we could never #imagine the end of our #travels.
.

At the top of Lion’s Rock, after you’ve climbed a series of steep #staircases, you will find the ruins of the #ancient civilisation of #King #Kassapa. From Lion’s Rock or #Pidurangala, his sister rock where we are standing, you have mesmerising views of the mist-wrapped forest.
Standing amidst the insistent wind we understood why Sri Lanka call #Sigiriya the 8th wonder of the world.

#Kalpitiya is known for its #beaches and #boats - so if you're ever there in #November or #December, it's the right time to go out to #sea and check out the #dolphins. *Location*
Kalpitiya is apparently the #best place to go dolphin #watching, while down South is better if you want to see #whales. Kalpitiya is about 4 and a half hours from #Colombo if you take the #bus, less if you use your own #vehicle.

#Private #air-con #cars to/from #Colombo cost about Rs 18,000 and take five to #seven hours. They are #easily arranged through any #place to #stay.

#Kings ruled the central plains of Sri Lanka from #Polonnaruwa 800 #years #ago, when it was a #thriving #commercial and #religious #centre. The #glories of that age can be found in the #archaeological #treasures that still give a #pretty good #idea of how the #city looked in its #heyday. You'll find the archaeological #park a delight to #explore, with #hundreds of #ancient #structures – tombs and #temples, #statues and #stupas – in a compact core. The Quadrangle alone is worth the #trip.
That Polonnaruwa is close to #elephant-packed #national parks only adds to its popularity. And with good accommodation and plenty of #bikes for hire, the town itself makes a pleasant base for a day or two, fringed by a huge, beautiful tank with a relaxed ambience.
.
Nearby Kaduruwela, 4km east of Polonnaruwa, has the lion's share of banks, shops and other facilities.
