I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. Psalms 63:2-4 NIV _________________________________________________
Do you struggle with self-pity? Do you ever get the feeling that you have it worse than others? Would you like someone to notice all the hard work and sacrifice you have made? ____________________________________________

David had it bad. He was living in the desert and being hunted down by a crazy king. Think you have it rough? So, how did David deal with his difficult life? First, he acknowledged his desperate state. But he didn’t stop there. He turned his physical thirst into a thirst for God. _____________________________________________

He states, “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” Then David continues to remember all the times when he saw God’s power and love at work. He determines to praise God in his dry and weary place. ______________________________________________

Praise is the antithesis of self-pity. They cannot co-exist together. When the feelings of “poor me” begin to close in, begin praising God. Remember all that he has done on your behalf. Remember that he alone satisfies. ______________________________________________________

Self-pity is actually rebellion against God. It is denying his power and love. Do not give it room in your life. Quickly identify it and repent. Now turn your hardship into praise and thanksgiving. Self-pity will quickly fade away. _____________________________________________

Who may ascend the hill of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false. Psalms 24:3-4 NIV __________________________________________________________⠀
⠀
God deeply desires that we come to meet with him. But, there is a specific way to approach him. Do you know what it is? _____________________________________________________________⠀
⠀
Those who are clean of hand, heart and mouth are able to come before God in worship. Does this sound like too steep a requirement? Is it really possible to be holy enough to stand before God? _____________________________________________________________⠀
⠀
Yes, it is. It is true that God longs to be worshipped. It is also true that he has made a way for this to happen. The death and resurrection of Jesus made the way for us to be in a position of holiness. The way has been opened for us to approach God. ____________________________________________________________⠀
⠀
Since we now have gained the position of holiness, we are called to live this out. Practical holiness is achievable through responding to the Spirit’s conviction. If you ask him, he will show you if there is any unholiness in your hands, heart or mouth. ____________________________________________________________⠀
⠀
Idolatry (loving something or someone more than God) is highlighted as an obstacle in meeting with God. Rid yourself of anything that would hinder you from worship. Throw away idols, whether large or small. Do not sacrifice your precious relationship with God for anything else. _____________________________________________________________⠀
⠀
Before worshipping God, ask him to search you for any unholiness. Deal with any sin that he brings to your mind. Deal with the sin through repentance. Don’t allow your approach to God be stopped by any idolatry. Don’t allow dullness in your worship life. God is worth the approach of holiness. ____________________________________________________________⠀

Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the praise of Israel. Psalms 22:3 NIV ______________________________________________
⠀
When we worship we long to meet with God. We call out for him to come and make himself known in our midst. Do you know that he does respond to your praise? He moves with your movement. _______________________________________________
⠀
The literal sense of this verse is that God sits down on our praises. So, in our worship, we create a platform for God to presence himself upon. Indeed, God is looking for worshippers who will worship him in spirit and in truth (John 4:23). In other words, he is looking for a place to land. ______________________________________________
⠀
Do you realize that God is actively seeking out places where he is wanted, where he is being worshipped? Wholehearted worship creates a landing pad or a platform for God to come down upon. God wants to make himself manifest in our gatherings. But he waits for our initiation of joyous worship. _______________________________________________
⠀
When God lands upon us, everything changes. Joy, conviction of sin and healing break out. He infuses our worship with his response of love. This causes our worship to be elevated to another level. ______________________________________________
⠀
It’s so important to realize that God is responding in the moment to your worship. Call out to him to come land on you. He watches and waits… waits for the invitation to come down upon you. ______________________________________________

Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. Psalms 103:1-2 NIV ____________________________________________________
⠀
Are you able to worship God when you don’t feel like it? What happens when tiredness, sadness or pain sets in? Is it possible to worship God then? _______________________________________
⠀
David knew great tragedy in his life. He experienced the pain of loss and rejection (actually spending much time running from a potential killer). How did he maintain his life of worship in the midst of such hardship? He led himself in worship. ________________________________________
⠀
You will never be able to lead others in worship until you have led yourself in worship. David called out to himself, “Come on, David, bless the Lord. Remember what he has done.” And then he began to recount all the things that God had done for him. ________________________________________
⠀
True worship leadership is born out of the place of declaring the goodness of God in the midst of trying times. Worship is not a moment of celebration when life is good. It is to be a sacrifice of praise (Heb. 13:15). A sacrifice. ______________________________________
⠀
Worship is about giving God a sacrifice, simply because he is worthy. And this often begins through the declaration from your mouth. Remember all that he has done in your life. Speak out your thanksgiving. ________________________________________
⠀
Don’t wait for someone to lead you in worship. Don’t wait for the next worship album, podcast or YouTube moment. Lead yourself in worship. God deserves it! _________________________________________

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1 NIV _____________________________________
⠀
You know that God is strong. You know his power is unmatched. Yet sometimes you wonder, “Does he care about me?” In our world power does not necessarily mean “I care.” It means that I can do what I want, when I want. _____________________________________
⠀
But how does God, the most powerful One in the universe, act in relation to us. The Bible says in Psalm 46 that this strong God is also the EVER-PRESENT God. In other words, this great big God is always present to help you. _____________________________________⠀
⠀
Psalms 46:5 continues with these words - “God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.” _____________________________________________________\
⠀
You cannot only run to this powerful God for help, but he stays within you. He is that close! The constant presence of God in your life means that you will not fall. But yet, you still wonder… “Isn’t it possible for me to start cracking under pressure, to begin falling over when troubles overwhelm me?” ____________________________________
⠀
Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.” This is our part to play. We can do this. Quiet your spirit. Remember the One who is God. And you are not him! Call out to your spirit, “Be still. Remember that God is alive. And he is with me!” ______________________________________
⠀
We begin to lose our way when we forget that God is ever-present to care for us in our troubles. So be still and remember that “The Lord almighty is with you.” He is ever-present to care for you. ______________________________________

“Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave– just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:26-28 NIV _____________________________________
⠀
God has spoken. God has promised. But the fulfilment has not reached you yet. You wonder if you heard right. You get confused. Was the promise too good to be true? ______________________________________⠀
⠀
Earlier in Matthew 20, Jesus told his disciples that he would suffer, die and then rise again. Though the disciples did not know what Jesus was talking about, Jesus knew full well what was ahead. He knew the incredible pain that was to come and the immeasurable joy that was promised. ______________________________________
⠀
And yet, immediately after baring his soul to the disciples, real life set in. The disciples began squabbling about who was the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. They surely did not understand Jesus’ real mission and all that was ahead. ______________________________________
⠀
As Jesus waited for his end to come AND the promise of resurrected life, what did he do? How did he act? How do act when your promise is taking a long time for fulfilment? How quickly do you turn inward and lose hope? ____________________________________
⠀
What did Jesus do? He kept serving. He served the disciples through his patient discipleship. He lived real life, one step at a time, making specific choices to keep serving. And he told his disciples to do the same. _____________________________________
⠀
While you wait, hold onto hope and serve. This is not wasted time. God is fulfilling his promises to you even now. But don’t sit on your hands. Get in there. Get your hands dirty and serve. Hope is stirred up within us as we serve. Hope is drained out of us when we focus inward. _____________________________________
⠀
Be like Jesus. Serve on your way to the fulfilment of a great promise. _____________________________

I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me. I will not fear the tens of thousands drawn up against me on every side. Psalms 3:5-6 NIV ____________________________________________________⠀
⠀
Trouble sleeping? How about when you wake up? Does your mind quickly get filled with anxious thoughts, schedules to be sorted and relationships to be clarified?⠀
_________________________________________⠀
David, the Psalmist, definitely had reason for anxiety and fear. His son, Absalom, was hunting him down. His life and kingdom was at stake. This would cause great sleeplessness. And yet, David called out to God. He refused to be paralyzed by the fear that was hunting him down. __________________________________________⠀
David declared that God was his shield. This was not a wishful attempt at making bad feelings go away. It was not fighting fear with a positive mental attitude. David believed that God’s reality (his power and protection) was true in his life. __________________________________________________________⠀
In the face of fear and anxiety, you have a choice to make. Will you go with your gut response and try controlling your life and other people? Or will you declare with David that “from the Lord comes deliverance”? _________________________________________⠀
The Lord wants you to lie down and sleep in peace - even when trouble is lurking. Calling out to him for deliverance and trusting in his caring solutions will be you peace - when you lie down and wake up. ________________________________________⠀
He is the God of David. He is your God. Trust him. _________________________________________⠀

Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. Psalms 42:5 NIV ______________________________________________

How is it possible to have hope in the midst of terrible circumstances? When dark times close in, doesn’t it feel like you have no real choice but to get swallowed up with heaviness and despair? _____________________________________________

The Psalmist acknowledges his great sadness before God. He talks about crying almost continually. Things look very dark. But then, somehow, out of the depths of his despair, he speaks to his soul. He says, “Put your hope in God. Praise him. Come on, you can do it.” It’s like he is cheering himself on to refocus his eyes to where God is. ______________________________________________

Your pain is real. The heaviness you feel is real. And it is also real that God is alive. He has a way for you to stand up in the midst of the pain. It begins first by remembering what God has already done in your life (see Psalm 42:5-6). Can you think back to when God showed you his faithfulness, when he showed you he cared? Perhaps it was a timely Scripture, a friend’s kind words or a sudden provision of finances. But he has revealed himself to you many times, hasn’t he? ______________________________________________

Then the Psalmist leads himself in worship… not because he feels like it. In fact, he feels terrible. But he chooses to speak out, “I will hope in you. I will praise you.” Use your mouth (the declaration of praise) to call your emotions to line up with the truth that God is alive. Don’t remain silent. Speak out, sing out, get active in your worship. ______________________________________________

Now watch new strength enter into your soul, as you simply remember what God has already done in your life, and as you start getting vocal with your praise and thanksgiving. Turn your longing for relief into a longing for God. _____________________________________________

He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. Psalms 1:3 NIV ______________________________________________
What a beautiful picture. A tree that does not decay… bears fruit, always prospers. It would be nice to have a tree like that. How about being a tree like that! _____________________________________________

God’s desire is that you would bear fruit and prosper. And he gives you a pathway to do this in Psalm 1. First, he says to remove weeds from around your tree. Get rid of bad influences that would ruin the fruit. Don’t stand with sinners or sit with mockers. _______________________________________________

Instead, enrich the soil of your tree with the Word of God. This doesn’t mean just to read the Bible more. But the one who will prosper actually delights in what God says. He loves it so much that he commits it to memory. He thinks of it often. ______________________________________________________ “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:2 NIV). The person who hears and obeys God will prosper. He is guaranteed ongoing fruit. _______________________________________________

How is your soil? Is it full of the wrong influence of ungodly voices, or is it full of God’s Word? Be the tree God wants you to be. Delight in His Word. Meditate on it. Fruit and prosperity are on the way. _____________________________________________

He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord. Psalm 40:3 NIV ______________________________________________

When’s the last time you wrote a new song? Maybe you have never written a song. Perhaps you are not musical at all. Could this verse be for you? ______________________________________________

In fact, this idea of a new song occurs quite often in the Psalms (Psa. 33:3; 40:3; 96:1; 98:1; 144:9; 149:1) and also in Isaiah 42:10 and Revelation 5:9. We are commanded to sing a new song to God. But why? ______________________________________________

Our song represents our sacrifice, our act of worship before the living God. Throughout the Bible, God’s people were instructed to bring the best of their animals and crops as their offering in worship. They were to bring the fresh sacrifice. God desires the fresh and new act of surrender (sacrifice) from us. This is the “living sacrifice” that pleases him (Romans 12:1). ______________________________________________

So, we are called to bring our “new song” to God as our act of worship. This could be an actual new melody sung from your heart to God. It could also be a new sacrifice of your time, money, energy, or creativity to God in worship. ______________________________________________

God loves your fresh worship. He is not pleased with stale, lifeless forms. So, give him a new song. Take a moment to consider what you could give him today. What fresh sacrifice will you offer him? _____________________________________________

"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father." Matthew 24:36 NIV ________________________________

You can't see the future... can't control or manipulate it. But, you still make your plans. How much time do you spend living in the future, instead of right now? The truth is - you don't know if this day will be your last. But, we can act as if we will live forever on this earth. _________________________________________

What would you do if you knew this was your last day? Are there any conversations you would be sure to have? Any expressions of love, offerings of forgiveness, or acts of kindness that you would want to show? Procrastination remains when we live as if there will be no end. ________________________________

The consistent encouragement from Scripture is to get ready for Jesus' coming. That is one aspect of the future that we can count on. Jesus promised to come get us. We can trust that he will keep his promise. _________________________________

So the best way to make this day count for eternity is to get ready for Jesus' coming. Get yourself ready. And get others ready. Do not get caught in living only for your five senses. Live with your eyes set on the unseen - the place where Jesus is moving and preparing for his return. _________________________________
