God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea. Psalm 46:1-2 NIV _____________________________________________

When we were young children, we hoped our dad would protect us. In our moments of great fear we looked for the strongest, most capable one around. As we grew up, we realized that the strong ones in our lives weren't so strong after all. In fact, we wondered if there was anyone that could protect us. _____________________________________________________

God has always been with you. He has always been your strong One - though you may have not known it. He is ever-present to help you. He not only sees your trouble, but he cares. _____________________________________________________

Even in the worst possible trouble, your God does not stand idly by. He is a strong refuge. He is the safe One. _________________________________________________________

Your God calls to you to run to him for safety. A refuge is not a refuge until it is used as one. Trust your God. Run into him for comfort, help and strength in your time of trouble. He won't let you down. ____________________________________________________________

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 NIV __________________________________

Do you ever wonder if you will see God's power manifest through your life? Will you see miracles, salvations and the obvious anointing of God? You hear stories of people in the Bible and in our modern day who saw the release of God's power for breakthrough in salvations and healings. Could this ever be true in your life? _________________________________________________

Joshua was about to succeed Moses as the leader of the Israelites. He watched Moses relate with God as a man relates with a friend. He watched Moses perform miraculous feats in providing food and water for the Israelites. He saw how God partnered with Moses to defeat powerful enemies. ___________________________________

Now it was Joshua's turn to experience God's miracles. But would he have the same results as Moses? Joshua most likely feared failure and abandonment. That is why he was constantly reminded by Moses to be "strong and courageous." Joshua was instructed not to be afraid and terrified. __________________________________________

Wouldn't fear be natural for Joshua? The feeling of fear - yes. The decision to remain in fear, however, would not be natural. It would be a denial of the truth. __________________________________________

When we choose to live in fear, we choose to live in unbelief in the character of God. We believe that God is untrustworthy and will not care enough to rescue us. ______________________________________________

Choose not to live in fear and terror. Speak out your trust in God's provision and protection - even when feelings of fear remain. He will sort through your feelings as you determine to hang onto the truth that the same God of Moses is now with you. ________________________________________________________

Genesis 2:2 - God rested. _________________________________________________________

Rest is a crucial component of fitness. In our younger years, it's in our sleep that we grow taller. The rhythm of work and rest is necessary for long-term health and spiritual power. How is your rest fitness? ____________________________________________________

Some think it is more spiritual to work non-stop, to burn the candle at both ends in work, ministry or hobbies. This is not God's best for us. He calls us to practice resting. God himself models this for us on Day 7 of creation. The One with the limitless source of energy chose to rest. So can you. ___________________________________________________

How to rest well? … that's another question. It's nice having a good sleep-in. But, will sleep alone give you the real rest you need? During your time off, what do you spend your hours doing? Netflix, surfing the internet, or Insta-Snap-Face-Tubing? We get excited about our time off, thinking that these hours are MINE. _______________________________________________________

But, really, how rested do you feel after binge-watching Netflix for 8 hours? How about after surfing the internet / social media for several hours… do you actually feel more rested? Typically, our great strategies to rest end up draining us. ______________________________________

Movies, the internet, social media can be fine outlets for rest if Jesus remains Lord over our time. He knows what will bring real life to us. Why don't you ask him for boundaries around your "rest activities"? The greatest source of rest comes in submitting to Jesus. Our souls get fed. ________________________________________

When our rest times become "ME" times without paying attention to God's loving boundaries, we get drained. In fact, the very times intended for great refreshment end up weighing our spirits down. To practice rest fitness, we need to make Jesus Lord over our off times. ______________________________________

Don't assume you know how to rest well. Get fit by asking Jesus and following his rest fitness plan for you! _______________________________________________

Mark 16:15 - He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. _________________________________________

You might look at Jesus' command and feel overwhelmed. How does one preach to ALL creation? Perhaps this command is for the evangelist or missionary… but could it be for me? Do you know how to preach the good news to all creation? One person at a time. _________________________________________________

In order to run a 15K race, you start by getting off the couch. Then, you put small runs in, slowly building your endurance and confidence. So too with evangelism, it starts by getting off the couch. You could wait for months before a person comes up to you and asks you to share the good news with them. To get fit, you need to practice starting conversations. ___________________________________________

I once had a strong desire to share the Gospel with a friend. I decided to play tennis with him once a week, hoping for an opening to share with him. Weeks and weeks went by and the Gospel never came up in our conversation… nothing even spiritual was discussed. By the end of the summer I still had not shared the good news with him. You see, I was waiting for some divine moment when the heavens would part, and he would fall on his knees in front of me. But, it never happened. ___________________________________________

So, on the last day of our summer tennis, we sat together cooling down. I turned to him very awkwardly and said, "Have I ever told you about the most important person in my life?" Now this was hardly a smooth segue into the Gospel. He said, "No." I briefly began sharing about my relationship with Jesus. He didn't respond. ___________________________________________

A couple days later, this friend called me with a quivering voice. He wanted to meet. When we got together, he began opening up about his home life… about deep struggles he was going through. I was able to share more about Jesus and pray with him. You see, my awkward advance with the Gospel softened the ground for more ministry to come. __________________________________________

Evangelism takes practice. Start today! _________________________________
John 13:14-15 - Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. ___________________________________________

Most of our days are filled with timelines, goals, meetings, work, classes, and hobbies. It seems like our time is spread so thin. How could we add another project like serving to our day? Really… who wants to serve when it would be so much easier to hide away and play Candy Crush on your phone? ____________________________________________

Practical acts of service are not meant to be treated as a series of necessary evils. They are opportunities to follow in the steps of Jesus. He does not call us to do something that he has not already done. Jesus not only performed the ultimate act of service on the cross, but he served people continually throughout his life. He spent most of his time with crowds of people giving himself away. Jesus served constantly through healing, delivering, comforting and teaching people. _____________________________________________

The reason we are so good at self-centeredness is that we practice it. If this is true, we can also practice serving others. Don't be surprised if serving doesn't feel pleasant. Neither does weight-lifting when you are just starting. It takes a bit of time to get your serving muscles in shape. It will also take some determined focus. _________________________________________________

How could you start getting fit? Opportunities to serve abound in your daily schedule. Ask God to point out a person to serve today. You could also ask God to point out a situation into which you could offer some practical service. Follow Jesus in this. Don't just find a random thing to do. As you sense his quiet prompting, take care of your act of service immediately. Do it without fanfare - just like Jesus. Don't call attention to yourself. Be grateful for the opportunity to join Jesus in serving. _______________________________________________

It's time to begin your daily work-out in serving. Follow Jesus in getting fit! __________________________________________________

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 - Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. ____________________________________________

And you thought spiritual fitness was only about your inner life with God… Did you know that the Father loves your heart, soul, mind and your body? Your body is not mere flesh and bones, a meaningless house for your spirit. _________________________________________

This is what the Greeks of old thought. The flesh and the spirit were separate entities to them. In other words, what you did with your flesh didn't really matter. As long as you kept your spirit pure, you were doing just fine. We have kept this wrong thinking alive in modern times as we separate our worlds into "sacred" and "secular". So we tend to give God our "hearts and minds" (our sacred or spiritual life), and then we keep the physical aspects (the secular) to ourselves. ___________________________________________

Did you realize the plans that God has for your body? He says, "Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit." 1 Corinthians 6:19 Oh yes, your body is deeply spiritual. It houses the Holy Spirit. Throughout history, God has looked for physical houses where he could fill with his glory… a place where he could live. He did this in the tabernacle, the temple and now in you. ___________________________________________

Our motivation of physical exercise can rise and fall greatly. We feel bad about our physical condition… we wish our body shape was different… we are tired of feeling weak. Ultimately, our self-focused motivations will never help in building and maintaining God's temple. __________________________________________________

How about exercising for Jesus' sake? Would you work at being the best container of God's glory that you can be? He deserves this. God does not compare your physical body and abilities to another. For he intentionally made us all different. But, he deeply desires that we use the body that we have for his glory. ____________________________________________

How many ways can you worship God? ______________________________________________________

Psalm 100:1-5 - Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. ________________________________________

Did you know that worship should be a full body experience? That is the testimony and the instruction of the Psalms. Just look at all the action words of Psalm 100. These are just examples of the many ways that we are called to actively worship God. _________________________________________

Perhaps you are used to worshipping God with your mind or heart. That is a good thing. But, God has called you to love him with your heart, soul, mind and strength - with everything. Deuteronomy 6:4 In other words, we need to get ourselves worship fit. ______________________________________________________

All of the physical activities commanded in Scripture regarding worship are ways to surrender our bodies to him. Remember - worship is all about surrender. It's not a style of music that God is looking for. He desires living sacrifices offered to him as worship. Romans 12:1 _______________________________________________

So, what part of yourself would you hold back in worship to God? Would you hold back a shout, a dance, a song or a clap? Would you offer your whole body to him in worship? Here are some ways to do this… ______________________________________________________

Colossians 3:16 NIV - Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. __________________________________________________

Ephesians 6:17 NIV - Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. _____________________________________________

Mark 4:8 NIV - Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, multiplying thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times. _____________________________________________________

A seed will bear fruit when it lands on good soil and remains in place for a good amount of time. In this place of waiting, sun and water nurtures the growth. Eventually, the seed will grow as it is meant to, bearing much fruit. ___________________________________________

The Word of God is meant to be sown into our lives. But, once we have his Word, we are responsible to create the fertile soil. In other words, our response to and use of God's Word will make the difference between lots of fruit or no fruit in our lives. We can create the right conditions for fruit to come. What a waste it would be if the powerful Word of God had no effect in our lives. We could let that happen. But, we don't have to. ______________________________________________

So, how can we allow the Word of God to bear fruit in our lives? How can we maximize Word Fitness? ________________________________________________

Colossians 4:2 - Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. __________________________________________________

We all tend to pray when the pressure is on. When there is a need for breakthrough, we know what it is to cry out to God. But, how are your prayer muscles? Are you able to regularly "lift" prayers to God? Or does it seem like a big push to pray longer than twenty seconds? _____________________________________________

It is in prayer that we cultivate relationship with God. It is in the listening and the responding that we learn God's character and ways. If we are not practiced or exercised in prayer, our knowledge and experience of God will stay at a minimum. So, how do we start? __________________________________________________

First, we need to understand that prayer is meant to be both an event and an ongoing process. You might like to run once a day for exercise (or maybe should start :)). This is a focused event in your day. But, you spend the rest of your day walking around your house, office or school. So too, prayer should be a focused exercise in our lives - "devote yourselves to prayer." Colossians 4:2; Matthew 5:5-13 But also, it is to be a continuous experience - "pray continually." 1 Thessalonians 5:17 ____________________________________________________

The best way to practice prayer is to practice listening to God. The reason we have lackluster prayer times is that we are not being prompted by God how we should pray. We find ourselves repeating the same phrases of, "Bless him, protect her and be with them…." Take a focused minute each day to ask God how you should pray. Follow his prompting. When you "run out" of things to pray, pause again and listen. Your ears are just as vital as your mouth in prayer. _________________________________________________

No matter where you are at in your prayer life, you can start exercising today! So, pause, listen, pray and make the start. _________________________________________________

1 Timothy 4:8 NIV - For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. ___________________________________________

Spiritual fitness is all about intimacy with Jesus. If you begin a relationship with Jesus and then just leave it at that, you soon will grow very unfit. Just like with physical health, your relationship with Jesus requires exercise, good diet and specific practices. Otherwise, you will lose desire for him. Your spirit will grow sluggish. Bad health tends to spiral leading to more bad health. ________________________________________

But you can get spiritually fit. Remember, fitness per say is not the goal. Fitness in this context is synonymous with an intimate, thriving relationship with Jesus. In the following days we will look at different spiritual disciplines (ways to get fit). _______________________________________

Take a moment to surrender yourself before the Lord. Perhaps he has already given you ways of staying spiritually fit. But, he will want to tweak, add to, or switch things up in your routines. Are you ready? Tell him that you want to follow his best for you in this season of life. _________________________________________________

It’s all about relationship with Jesus. These disciplines are not meant to be a mindless protein shake for the soul. Relationships require listening and feeding back. This should be happening throughout your exercises. Jesus has so much to reveal to you about himself as you ready yourself to receive him. ________________________________________________

It’s time to get fit! __________________________________________________

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. Ephesians 1:4 NIV photo: @katewrener _________________________________________________

Do you remember going outside for recess as a child? All the kids line up, teams are chosen. Where did you stand in that picture? Were you the captain, chosen first, somewhere in the middle? Or were you picked last. Well, you weren't really chosen. You were the last person standing. So a particular team had to take you. _______________________________________

Some people feel that way with God. They feel like an after-thought… like God had to pick them. They do not sense the personal initiative God has toward them. The truth is, however, that God was thinking about you before the creation of the world. His choosing of you was incredibly premeditated. God picked you to be on his team, to be in his family, long before the world was even founded. _____________________________________________

God's thoughts toward you didn't stop though. David says in Psalm 139:17-18, "How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you." How much is God thinking about you? Try counting up all of the grains of sand at your local beach, and then extend that t-o the beaches of the world. God is thinking about you, his precious child, A LOT. ____________________________________________________

The fact of God's choosing of you and the knowledge of his many precious thoughts toward you gives you great purpose. Your life has meaning, because the infinite God thinks you are important. His thoughts about you are true and the basis of your identity and purpose. ____________________________________________

God always intended for you to know and love him. Confirm your purpose today by thanking him for choosing you. ______________________________________________
