This was a truly successful year for Great Lakes #PipingPlover in New York! Our single pair raised their entire brood of four chicks from tiny fluffballs (a) all the way to fledglings (b, c) which have now left #LakeOntario on their fall migration south. The amazing collaborative effort between Onondaga Audubon, @nystateparks, @sunyesfimage, @nysdec, @audubon_ny, and @usfws and the hard work of parks staff and dune stewards in educating the public on why sharing the shore with these endangered birds is so important helped lead to this great success. Researchers at SUNY-ESF also collected behavioral and habitat data throughout the summer to aid in efforts to restore habitat for these imperiled birds in the future. We hope this is the beginning of an increasing population of #GLPipingPlover on eastern Lake Ontaio's shores and we look forward to being a part of their continued conservation!

This summer we have been hard at work constructing a #ChimneySwift Tower at #SUNYESF! Even though dozens of #swifts can use cavities for roosting purposes during migration, only one pair will nest in a cavity at a time. This makes nest sites scarce. When completed, this tower will be 12 feet tall and insulated to help keep eggs and nestling safe from the hot sun. We will keep you updated on our progress!

Thanks to our partners @onondagaaudubon and @sunyesfimage for another successful bird banding season at Baltimore Woods! Yesterday some of our campers got to learn about how this research is conducted and met a red-eyed vireo up close! #birdbanding #natureinyourhands
Since these #tinyhomes must be built on piers (due to possibility of flooding) we need to dig four feet down for 8 separate footings. There is concern an excavator would disrupt too much soil around the piers. So, by hand it is. A dynamite group of volunteers made up of @sunyesfimage students @ohkmann @em_cat7 @cathy182 @acolorfulgentleman and residents and staff chipped away at the job. All smiles, somehow! Turn on sound for video...
I spy with my little eye. Found on a leaf outside of Illick Hall.
Some of our students are having a fantastic summer. Repost from @ SUNYESF (@twsatesf using @RepostRegramApp - Happy #worldsnakeday wildlifers! Snakes are incredibly diverse and fascinating, and while they may be harder to spot than large mammals or birds, they often provide a tantalizing experience when encountered in the wild, and are the subject of a great deal of wildlife research. You can share your encounters with snakes and other wildlife using #twsatesfbreak , and be sure to check out our friends @esfherpclub for more!
