Choreographies of Resistance is a multimedia installation that represents the Palestinian sumoud and resistance in the face of Israel’s military occupation and settler colonial violence. The works are based on a year-long field research in Palestine, specifically in the city of Bethlehem. The exhibition offers viewers an opportunity for critical inquiry as well as reflection. As an artist whose life is affected by the violence of the occupation, I provide an alternative representative record of the Palestinian struggle for freedom, self-determination and right of return. In my representation of this installation I hope to fill a void in contemporary art and address, visually and sonically, experiences of the resilient Palestinians.

Nkame: A Retrospective of Cuban Printmaker Belkis Ayón opens Saturday, June 2nd, 2018 at 7PM and runs through September 3rd, 2018. Ayón mined the founding narrative of the Afro-Cuban fraternal society called Abakuá to create an independent and powerful visual iconography…Ayón’s choice of subject matter—the history, mythology, and iconography of Abakuá—was a direction she took in 1985 while still a high school student at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts. This all-male Afro-Cuban brotherhood arrived in the western port cities of Cuba in the early 19th century, carried by enslaved Africans from the Cross River region of southeastern Nigeria. A brief synopsis of the founding myth of Abakuá begins with Sikán, a princess who inadvertently trapped a fish while drawing water from the river. She was the first to hear the unexpected and loud bellowing of the fish, the mystical “voice” of Abakuá. Because women were not permitted this sacred knowledge, the local diviner swore Sikán to secrecy. Sikán, however, revealed her secret to her fiancé, and because of her indiscretion was condemned to death. In Ayón’s work, Sikán remains alive, and her story and representation figure prominently.

The Jerome Project (My Loss), 2014
.
“The Jerome Project” began in 2011, when artist Titus Kaphar was researching his father Jerome’s prison records. Kaphar, who was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and currently lives between New York and Connecticut, creates artwork that, both aesthetically and thematically, sews together past and present in a rough and sometimes violent reworking of history. When looking into his father’s history, he was surprised to find 99 men, also incarcerated, who shared his father’s first and last names.
.
And just like that, the project was born. The series consists of oil portraits of the various Jeromes, based on their mug shots, juxtaposed against gold leaf, a nod to Byzantine paintings. Each face is partially submerged in tar, with the amount of tar vaguely corresponding to the amount of time the subject spent in prison. The tar also restores some privacy to the faces that was long denied them, while simultaneously alluding to the way their reputations were ruined as a result of their incarceration. The paintings appear both like royal portraits and long lost images drowning in garbage and gunk, the subjects’ mouths no longer able to communicate while the eyes speak volumes.

The Vesper Project:
.
The Vesper Project is one of Kaphar's most immersive installations. It concerns a fictional African-American family in the 19th century that passes for white. Kaphar created an installation where visitors would walk through a 19th century house, uncertain about what was reality and what was remembrance. The project was inspired by Kaphar's attempt to paint a portrait of his aunt, only to realize that parts of his memories of her were fictive. He spoke about the experience while promoting his show: "It occurred to me that, for some reason, my brain had decided to insert her into periods in my life when I needed extra support. That left me reeling; it left me frightened. It made me feel as if I couldn’t trust my own memory. I felt like I was losing my mind."The Vesper Project was also a collaboration with a visitor to the Yale Art Gallery, where one of Kaphar's paintings was displayed. The visitor, Benjamin Vesper, experienced a mental breakdown during his visit and punched one of Kaphar’s paintings. During Vesper's subsequent institutionalization,Kaphar and Vesper began a correspondence. The two exchanged letters for some time, writing about family and mental instability. Vesper broke out of the hospital and visited a 19th century house, believing it was his family's home. Kaphar intended to create a physical space for Vesper to return and face his memories, and this became the foundation of The Vesper Project. The rooms contain fragments of memories, specters, and paintings. These rooms are able to be walked through and experienced.

Luke 7:36 explores the complexities of a woman’s sexuality It ruptures the false dichotomy between a whore and a saint and challenges what a respectable woman could look and behave like. In a series of photographs taken in the Igreja e Convento de São Francisco in Salvador de Bahia, Brasil, Luke 7:36 challenges the limited archetypes of the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene, the rain and the whore, and demands for the dignity of a person regardless of their sexual behavior.

There’s that smell in the air, the smell that’s familiar to home. You don’t realize that it smells this way until you’ve come back from a long trip. It’s a mix of the humid air from the outside settling with the morning dew alongside the faint mixture of last night’s dinner. The house creaks as it does every so often, planting itself, claiming its space. For so long I’ve claimed this space as mine, weaving endless attachments with the cracks on the floor and the one misplaced tile. I am realizing, however, that this was never my space to claim. It is not my home, it is my parents home. It is in that realization that I begin to unravel who my parents are when they are not being my parents. The tensions that arise from both parent and child; frustrations and the dualities of love and hate. There is a collaboration that happens between my parents and I. Certain truths show through in the photograph. The Chipping on the walls, the lines on my father’s face, a comfort throughout each scene. I am eternalizing them, doing what my memory can’t. I am capturing my version of home. My inherent fear of losing them drives my interest in them. As much as I’d like to get away, they always call me down to have dinner with them.

Mirtha, is a video exploration about my mother. A woman who lives with depression and whose personality is often overshadowed by this emotional state. Although neither of us want to admit it, we both know that the fact that her marriage with my father failed, had much to do with the way she is now.
