“I moved to the Gazi district of Istanbul in 2014 to complete the Night Blind project. I am currently photographing the armed political conflicts, dog fights and sex parties that take place in Gazi and other segregated neighborhoods in Istanbul. The common factor between the segregated neighborhoods is that the residents are mainly Kurds, Alevi’s and refugees. In recent times the government has increased the pressure, and are looking into different policies to wipe out these segregated neighborhoods.  The conflicts in the east of the country, often increase the severity of the pressures applied to these neighborhoods. Long term projects such as urban transformation are being introduced and dissembling the culture created in these neighborhoods. Problems within the education system also bring pressure and problems to the neighborhoods. There are simply not enough schools in these areas to cater to the population and there are also not enough teachers which results in most of the children leaving school without completing high school. This causes the children to carry out their potential in other areas. The children grow up trying to prove themselves from a very young age. Unfortunately this leads some to follow a path that leads to drug trafficking or taking part in illegal dog fights. After a while, this becomes a way of life. Sexual activities are one of the most secretive events that are pushed into the night. Those who cannot live out their different sexual orientations and preferences within society, live them secretly at night. People from different classes and professions come together to organize sex parties. Those who participate in these events are usually people who are forced to hide their sexual orientations and preferences from society. ”

Judy Natal | Another Storm is Coming
.
“Who hasn’t thought about New Orleans, post-Katrina and been awed, though devastated, by the sheer force of nature fueled by global warming, that so viscerally etched the land with water?  A piece of graffiti that I photographed at a location reclaimed by swamp near Lake Pontchartrain, inspired the project title Another Storm is Coming, and sets the tone for this new work. In March 2013, from the southern coast of Louisiana in Venice, Grand Isle, and Houma, west to the Native cultures of the Coushatta Tribe outside of Elton, to the many individual neighborhoods in the city, the unique characteristics and sheer quantity of water-formed landscapes enticed me further. The points where land and water meet lack any clear hierarchies. Swamps, rivers, river branches, bayous, lakes, basins, coasts, sea, and wetlands, are all in constant flux, mutable and shape-shifting, driven by cycles of increased rainfall and warmer temperatures due in part, to climate change, rise of CO2, and global warming.
.
In the face of Superstorm Sandy, I had to admit to myself, that my optimistic beliefs that guided my previous future-focused, environmentally driven work Future Perfect – that we would do the right thing and make the right choices – have been rapidly evaporating, replaced by a very visceral, ever-present, anxiety about the future. Another Storm is Coming is a premonition that is a much darker vision of the future. Full of ominous warnings and a steadily escalating sense of foreboding of impending disaster, as the environmental issues become more and more pressing, repetitive, and the need to act more immediate.”

Shortly after @RiceUniversity acquired the new JuiceBOX containers, these new structures served as the site for a combined art installation as a part of Houston Fotofest 2016, a biennial event that draws up to 250,000 visitors to the city. CENHS helped organize the production of the event at Rice by collaborating with two climate change-themed artists to install their respective pieces at the juicebox site. Judy Natal’s multimedia project, “Another Storm is Coming,” captured the devastation in the region between Houston and New Orleans in the decade after Hurricane Katrina. In this piece Natal documents a region that has been hit especially hard by storms, flooding, and rising sea levels, while also considering its proximity to large-scale oil and gas extraction projects taking place on- and offshore. The other installation, “Dear Climate,” was developed by a team of artists including Marina Zurkow, Una Chaudhuri, Fritz Ertl, and Oliver Kellhammer, and sought to make a call to action for humans to renegotiate their relationship to the climate and climate change. Zurkow’s website describes the project as a response to “the psychic dimensions of climate change and global ‘weirding.’ It is a training program for the spirit and the imagination… instead of crisis and catastrophe, ‘Dear Climate’ animates the familiar and ordinary; instead of desperation and heroism, it fosters playfulness and friendliness.”

JuiceBOX Installation
.
In late 2015, three new structures appeared on the @RiceUniversity campus. The generous gift of Rice architecture alumnus and @Metalab_Studio founder Joe Meppelink, the strange structures were shipping containers mounted with solar panels. These containers, or “juiceboxes,” are 20 x 8 climate-controlled microgrids that have the capacity to produce 14kW of power and a 100% renewable power management system, currently located at College Way Loop and Alumni Drive. On the Rice campus, the juiceboxes have been designated as mobile solar generator artspaces, having been used now for several major art installations. Beginning in April 2017, Fossilized in Houston (@fossilizedhouston2) will be using the juiceboxes for a project titled “Like There is No Tomorrow,” a series of interactive installations examining the decline of species through the works of local Houston artists. Prior to this, the juiceboxes were used to house the “Dear Climate” and “Another Storm is Coming” art installations for Houston Fotofest 2016. @Fotofest_intl is a biennial event that draws up to 250,000 visitors to the city, and during the event CENHS collaborated with the respective artists of these projects to put on a fantastic exhibition on art, aesthetics, and the everyday in an age of catastrophic climate change.

THE FLOODING OF VENICE | Tanja Milbourne
.
Current work showing at the @Venice.Architecture.Biennale, at Palazzo Mora.
.
Science predicts a future of global warming, rising sea levels and likely conflicts over resources. There may come a time when many parts of the world will become unliveable, flooded and abandoned. .
'The Flooding of Venice' represents this future as a series of photographs.
.
Working with a scale-model replica of the room at the Palazzo Mora, in Venice, where the work is exhibited, the artist created photographs that depict sequentially – and in great detail – the palazzo becoming flooded and then increasingly derelict: the wallpaper starting to peel off; the marble cracking; plants starting to grow; debris collecting in the space; the roof deteriorating and its structure crumble. .
The work functions on multiple levels; the viewer may recognise the space depicted by the photographs as the Palazzo Mora, allowing to identify the predictions being made as likely possibilities of what the future may hold for the space they are standing in.
.
On another level, the viewer may also be able to discover the 'lie' of the photographs. By presenting the photographs of the modelled space within the real space they challenge the accepted ‘reality’ of the photograph and in particular the architectural photograph. .

Ai Weiwei, renowned Chinese conceptual artist’s brand new installation titled “Soleil Levant” is currently on exhibition at the @KunsthalCharlottenborg gallery in Copenhagen, Denmark. Running June 20 through October 1, 2017, Weiwei’s “Soleil Levant” installation barricades the windows of Kunsthal Charlottenborg with more than 3,500 salvaged life jackets collected from refugees arriving at the Greek Island of Lesbos.
.
“Obviously Ai Weiwei wants to put attention to the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe, or as he calls it, the human crisis,” said Kunsthal Charlottenborg director Michael Thouber in a statement. “The beautiful thing about this piece is that every one of these lifejackets, 3,500 lifejackets represents a human story.”
.
The name of the installation, “Soleil Levant” was inspired by Claude Monet’s painting from 1872 which portrays the harbor of Le Favre in France at the end of the 1870-71 Franco-Prussian War. The stunning installation aims to bring focus to the refugee crisis taking place across Europe.

…As part of the @PalazzoStrozzi ’s Ai Weiwei retrospective, the artist wrapped the museum’s exterior with a ribbon of bright orange lifeboats. Titled Reframe, the work is one of 22 by the artist displayed at the Palazzo and is perhaps the show’s most powerful. Hung directly over the building’s second-floor windows, the boats’ inflated edges mimic the shape of the voussoirs they cover while their latticed-canvas floors impose a grid that produces a prison-bar effect when viewed from the interior. The boats, a stark contrast with the Palazzo’s rusticated stone façade, serve as a glaring reminder about the dangers refugees face in traversing the Mediterranean to get to countries like Italy. In this way, Reframe is very much in the same spirit as the artist’s haunting life-vest installation in Berlin earlier this year, in which the artist hung 40,000 used refugee life vests on the columns of the city’s landmark Konzerthaus.
.
The Florence exhibition, titled “Libero” (translation: free), encompasses other multimedia works by Ai Weiwei that challenge the confines of a typical museum show, using every imaginable corner of the structure and its courtyard.”

Rebel, Jester, Mystic, Poet: Contemporary Persians—The Mohammed Afkhami Collection
.
Through September 24, 2017
.
Rebel, Jester, Mystic, Poet: Contemporary Persians illuminates the multifaceted histories and identities of Iranians today. Through works of art by Iranian-born artists across three generations, the exhibition sheds light on the rich heritage—as well as the trials and triumphs—of the Iranian people during a period of social and political unrest. Drawing from the collection of financier and philanthropist Mohammed Afkhami, Rebel, Jester, Mystic, Poet highlights the unique evolution of contemporary art both in Iran and by Iranian artists who have left their native country. Paintings, sculptures, photographs, and videos by 23 artists express four interwoven themes that transcend standard chronologies. .

Torture, Andres Serrano | June 3 – October 8, 2017
.
At The Foundry, an experimental space in the French industrial town of Maubourguet, Andres Serrano assumed the role of the torturer. Under the guidance of military personnel, Serrano photographed more than 40 models in degrading positions, using devices that were produced on-site by the local residents. The models suffered humiliation and actual physical distress as they were shackled, submerged and forced into stress positions for extended periods of time.
.
Both mental and physical techniques were used on his subjects, as Serrano chose to enter into a lineage of perverse experimentation for punishment or coercive means. During the Holocaust, brutal medical testing included sterilization, needless amputations and the conjoining of twins for the sadistic physical and ideological advancement of the Nazi race. Not long after, the architects of horror changed from physicians to psychologists, informing Stasi interrogators and laying the foundation for the CIA’s covert torture program. Inspired, in part, by the methods the British Government used in Northern Ireland during the time of “The Troubles”, the reoccurring ‘deep interrogation’ tactics comprised of five techniques, wall-standing, hooding, subjection to noise, deprivation of sleep, and deprivation of food and drink.
