My Tampa students after a fun day tutoring math to NYC students, I brought them to some of their favorite stores in Times Square. The look in their eyes....especially in giant Macy's....was priceless, they had never been in stores this size โœจ

THIS ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ just made my heart EXPLODE into a million pieces ๐Ÿ’œ @ipromiseschool #TeachWithLove
Just a few of the many things I say in my classroom that get them to remember a formula or to even get their full attention.
๐Ÿ˜‰
Now, how you connect with your own students depends on you and your students. Dr. Chris Emdin, author of "For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood" says, "in [urban] classrooms, if we payed attention to how we can incorporate aspects of hip-hop into our teaching, weโ€™d be better served"

What crazy / cool things do you say in your classroom? ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’œ ๐Ÿค”

Teaching is a service from the heart, we do everything from the heart and sometimes take too many things "to" heart ๐Ÿ’”

Teachers who Teach With Love, are the ones that bare their soul....and guess what, thereโ€™s no armor in that space.
The bravest souls are the ones who are willing to be vulnerable, to do what is best for the students and also, for themselves.
โœจ
Only the COWARDLY can attempt to steal power from those who lower their shields. By talking about them when they are not there, by seeing others as competition instead of seeing opportunities for collaboration. I feel bad for those that feel good about putting others down. For it shows more about how they feel about themselves then who they speak of. ๐Ÿ˜‰
Look, not everyoneโ€™s going to like you (or me). Thatโ€™s a reality. Different strokes for different folks. Once thatโ€™s understood, commit yourself to the force of good, surround yourself with others who do the same.... we can only protect ourselves by continuing to be ourselves....despite our armor-less existence.

Here are two of my colleagues who are a beacon of light and love, who are creating something meaningful in this world....incredible souls, who give me insight and inspiration everyday. ๐Ÿ˜˜ โœŠ๐ŸฝโœŠ๐ŸฟโœŠ๐ŸพโœŠ๐Ÿผ

How do you handle criticism from others?
I sat nervously wondering if it was going to really happen. My little team, my best friends, people I adored, trusted in me and my purpose. This is my purpose.
โ€œI've been placed on this earth to help people, both adults and young adults. Expose them to what I have been exposed to and find what they love. That's it. It'll look different each day, but I empower my students to love their lives as a result of giving to others and following their dreams.โ€ Months later, I am still repeating this mantra. This is when I feel fully alive, giving experiences, changing perceptions while giving perspectives, and connecting with people, especially those who believe in Travel + Education as a catapult to a positive shift in oneโ€™s mindset.

As I read this text message I received from a young man that attended our Math Mission Trip, I was reminded to take a second to express GRATITUDE for those that have supported my mission. I am indebted to the kindness and love that you showed my students.

This student (below) would have never had the resources to do what we didโ€ฆโ€ฆBecause of YOU, there has been a positive impact made on his life. For that, Iโ€™m indebted to your kindness. Thank you, friend

Supporting teachers and students of color may sometimes mean recognizing one's privileges and shifting gears from leading the conversations to just listening, asking, and allowing them to have a platform to speak in a society where they are usually not represented. My colleague @thesci_teach said it best when she wrote "supporting, and acknowledging the presence of teachers of color, starts with us - teachers- it's about how and whose voices are heard, allowing different perspectives brought to the table." โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
It is not about being their "savior" or about how you are going to 'save' these kids. I needed to see people who looked like me in positions of power too, including my teachers...after all, I was one of these kids, I didn't need rescuing...I just needed opportunities, because guess what? I was going to be successful and I was going to "ACHIEVE", I just needed access to the same things other students were given โœŒ๐Ÿฝ

I am hanging this in my classroom! I want my girls to know about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who is an educator, activist and politician of Puerto Rican descent. This Bronx Nuyorican / Latina from the Bronx, stunned the nation by defeating one of the senior leaders in the House, Joseph Crowley in the Democratic Primary for NY's 14th District.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Like many of us growing up where the odds are set against you, Ocasio-Cortez has continuously hustled for her family, her community and is truly a woman of the people โœŠ๐ŸฟโœŠ๐ŸพโœŠ๐ŸฝโœŠ๐Ÿผ she did all this because she had "ganas" (the desire to succeed)
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
As the saying goes, if you are not sitting at the table, then you are on the menu. Thank you Ocasio-Cortez for putting us Latinos and females "at" the table....now it's time for more leaders to move all other underrepresented groups from the menu to the table....by Voting!! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
She is an inspiration and a voice this country needs! Let's get her to Congress!!
