Lajja Gruel - A must learn if you are even remotely into health!
.
Lajja or paddy puffed rice is considered to be a very balya (strength-giving) and Tarpankar (nourishing) food as compared to its plain puffed rice cousin or anything else for that matter. Processed very uniquely, Lajja requires very little Agni and hurts no dosha.
.
It is the FIRST food given in fever or even after an episode of food poisoning on diarrhea. Even though it requires very little Agni, it nourishes very well giving you tremendous strength instantly.
.
Recipe for Lajja Gruel -
Boil one cup of Lajja in 4 cups of water till soft. Mash with a blender or fork. Add Himalayan salt and any other herb your body needs that day. Feel the strength instantly.
.
This can also be used as a replacement for milk for those intolerant to the cow juice!
.
Lajja is also known as Kheel Mamra. I would recommend picking a packet the next time you pass the Indian grocery store
.
I also use Lajja to make Poha. Oh! So much healthier!

The word PAIN makes us shrug! As though it’s a ghost and we must run away from it. But we welcome PAIN KILLERS with open arms!
.
Pain is your body trying to tell you something. And it’s pleading for you to listen. When we take pain killers at the first sign of pain, we are asking our precious bodies to Shutup! We are asking it to take the pain and shrug it away into another body part. We push it into deeper organs and more serious pathologies.
.
What we really need to do with pain is to understand it. Where does it come from? What triggers it? What time of the day does it visit? Is it related to stress? What makes it feel better. We need to honor the pain if we want to honor our bodies!
.
Once we have understood our pain, we can manage it. We can take some help. .
It’s the difference between asking a crying child to shutup without understanding what’s wrong versus listening and empathizing and then addressing!
.
Listen to your pain!

Not a Big Fan!
.
Of our dear Patanjali products as well as any product that makes a broad spectrum claim like “this is good for your digestion or sleep or skin or joints or whatever” and then claims for it to be Ayurvedic!
.
To give an example, let’s say your food hasn’t turned out right. You can’t just add one magic ingredient to fix it. You need to identify exactly what it needs. Salt? Sugar? Spice? More cooking time? Etc.
.
Similarly, when something in your body is off, be it your sleep or digestion - it’s important to understand what’s specifically off. For one it could be bad dreams, another it could be internal heat at night and for a third it could be pain. One herb can’t fix them all.
.
Ayurveda is not about substances used, it’s about the principle used behind any substance. Once you can identify exactly what your body needs, only then can you give it the right help.
.
In Ayurveda, the diagnosis is always more important than the drug!
.
And this is why when the focus is on the drug or the herb only, Ayurveda may not work!

Agni - Reposted! 🔥 🔥 🔥
What is this Agni that I am constantly talking about? “Agni is to our body, what the sun is to the universe”

Let’s say you want to make Lasagne and you very painfully gather all the ingredients. Every one of them, the pasta, the basil, the veggies, the sauce, the ricotta. You even have the prefect dish to make it and serve it. But you realize that your oven does not go above a 100 degrees and there is no way you can cook that lasagne. It will remain undercooked! That heat required for the transformation of food is Agni.

Your stomach is also like an oven. And Agni or Digestive Fire is what it takes to transform your food in to waste and nutrients. You may have the Perfect ingredients - you think, (proteins, fruits, nuts, good fats) but what without the right Agni or temperature, you can’t transform them. YOU JUST CANT PUT THEM TO USE.
We all have times when we feel like we are trying our best to eat healthy but our bodies are not responding. Most often, the key to this frustrating problem is in how high or low your fire is burning! (Agni)

The modern medical world has realized that the warm fuzzy environment created by friendly bacteria (probiotics) in the gut contributes greatly to digestive health. Ayurveda, 5000 years ago made that warm connection and called it Agni. (Not a 100% comparable as Agni is a lot more comprehensive)

Keep that fire burning! 🔥

Surviving the winter - it’s true that the winter is harder and rougher if you’re vegetarian and skinny! .
And sick kids are a handful for a non medicating Ayurvedic mother. It keeps me in the kitchen all day with my mortar and pestle. So my only bet is prevention.
.
This has worked for us like magic!
.
Milk - always boiled with a pinch of sitopaladi and licorice (for the two months of winter)
.
Ears covered when outdoors - yes, wind can get in there and dry the phlegm - thus the dry cough and asthma. .
Socks always - Your feet are the draft blockers of your body. They prevent the heat from leaving it. Socks indoors and outdoors!
.
Oil and warm shower - the girls quickly oil their body and take a warm (not hot) shower. Long hot showers make you feel good while your in there, but the body temperature is drastically lowered after. The oil insulates the body!
.
We avoid anything cold, excess fruits, excess cheese and dry foods like popcorn and salad. Food is warm, nourishing and contains fats!
.
Neti - at the first sign of phlegm - girls are Neti pros!
.
And most of all - we tea our way to health - tulsi chamomile or ginger!
.
And needless to say, we don’t do flu shots ! .
So far the girls have been phlegm and cough free this winter. Fingers crossed - the grand winter months of Jan and Feb lie ahead of us!

The Bronx Botanical Gardens are very exciting for most normal people. I kind of felt the same way when I visited Ayurvedic botanical gardens on the Konkan coast!
.
Shown in the second video is a castor seed. Castor oil is gaining a popularity in the West. Ayurveda always knew that for Vata it is the best!
.
The texts say clearly that Castor Oil is the param aushadhi (best drug) for Vata. It takes all the wind trapped in places in your body and reroutes it downwards and takes it out through the right place. This does not mean flatulence. It just means that it gets things to get move in the right direction.
.
The most common uses are
- Vata type constipation (1tablespoon with milk at night)
.
- Erratic and delayed periods (for a few nights before your date)
.
-
Sciatic never pain - Can work like magic on this one. Topically and internally.
.
- Delayed or painful labor - Delivery is governed by Vata. When it’s acting up, you need castor oil to intervene.
.
And yes - it’s Kesya - so will promote hair growth if you can deal with its stickiness and stench! (Applied to your hair - not consumption)
.
Castor oil can be taken safely by most unless you have a lot of heat in your body. And that generous bowel movement you have the next day, is not diarrhea my dear - it’s cleansing.
.
You can be brave and Gulp a tablespoon when you need it!

This is a statue of Lord Dhanvantari, the lord of Ayurveda. It gives me goosebumps every day! 🙏🏼
.
I could never develop full faith in idol worship growing up. But I always believed in energies. Now as I evolve, I realize that they are one and the same.
.
When I keep an idol at my altar, it’s not about the physical entity, it’s about the energy I invite into my home. It’s me reminding myself what the purpose of my life is. It’s spending two minutes to go deep within and introspect. .
The statue does not carry the energy. My thoughts do. The statue is a physical body to inspire my thoughts in the right direction.
.
This statue means a lot to me. It was given to me by my teacher. She asked us to surrender our lives to making authentic Ayurveda available. I surrendered. It reminds me of my promise everyday.
.
Lord Dhanvantari carries a leech, conch, energy disc and Amrut (life saving elixir). He reminds me that an Ayurvedic practitioner is the embodiment of life! .
What energies inspire you? Do you spend a few minutes everyday reminding yourself of your higher goals. Your altar does not need to be physical. It can be in your mind. But make sure you visit it everyday! .

Mummify these books with me when I die so that their eternal knowledge stays etched on my soul!
.
From the Granthas - talking about Holding Your Pee - suppressing the urge to urinate. (Mutra-Vega-Dharan)
.
We’ve made a big deal about clean toilets and rightfully so, so much that sometimes we hold our pee till we get home, or till we finish that important project. I find myself delaying my urge mostly when I am in a compelling conversation. But it could be a cause for many diseases! .
It could cause overall body ache, urinary stones in the long run, pain in the bladder, groin and even a runny nose, headache, belching and heartache! (The vata reroutes upwards)
.
Even though these seem far fetched, these are real and eventually manifest. Especially with young children, who get so lost in their play that pee becomes secondary!
.
So listen to that nature’s call and find that toilet when you need to!

A bouquet of fresh herbs! Nothing makes a better gift for me. .
Fresh herbs - are generally less potent than dried herbs and can be used safely and effectively as Ahariya dravyas (food). This does not mean that they aren’t effective. Here is a run down of my favorites!
.
Parsley - Ushna or hot in nature - this one can be specifically used in fever, bloating and urinary tract infections! .
Fresh Mint - Sheeta sparsh - ushna Virya - Cool to touch but hot in action. This herb can go either way. Generally, a strong tea can help extreme Bloating and open up blocked respiratory passages.
.
Cilantro - Even though it ain’t cool in its action, it relieves burning and thirst. Digestive support is cherry on top!
.
Lemongrass - extremely hot with volatile oils - this one has a sharp Action on Vata. Very effective in colds and coughs!
.
Remember, your herbs don’t just garnish - they nourish!

J had been told by her GI that constipation was ok as long as she didn’t experience any other symptoms. Some people just go once in two days. And that’s normal.
.
About two years and 8 pounds later, she experienced severe heartburn and bloating at a dinner party she was hosting. She still remembers that day as she felt like she was going to get a heart attack and die. A couple of antacids and she was as good as new.
.
Or so she thought. Till these symptoms became regular visitors. And then permanent house guests. Everywhere she went, went the bottle of antacids. And then prescription antacids. And then began the headaches. And so she befriended painkillers.
.
She felt like she had become a nasty person. She didn’t sleep well, felt older and black heads and white heads polka dotted her face.
.
Exhausted but determined, she decided to work with me. It took us two months to clean her diet. No salads, no tomatoes, no cheese and limited spices. Food timings were changed to eat more during the hours that the sun was out. Herbs were added to the water. .
The episodes began decreasing in frequency. She followed the regimen to the T! The headaches disappeared and she began to feel lighter. She still experiences some bloating and heartburn occasionally. .
I am certain that J will feel even better with time. The most important thing is that she has learned not to say “shut up” to her body by giving it a drug when it expresses discomfort. She understands it’s her body’s way to let her know how desperate it is for healing! .
Thanks for listening to your body and working with me to help it heal.
.
J’s message in my story today!
