8th March 2019 marks the 108th International Women's Day. This year the theme for IWD is #BalanceforBetter. As a society, we can only achieve this balance if we empower the women of our society. This year at RKF, we are taking this theme a step further... empowerment for women by women! We are fundraising to provide sanitary pad kits to the school girls of Kisumu.

From the feedback of our pilot program last year, we learnt that while the re-usable pads made a great impact on attendance and performance in class, 4 pads were not enough. This year, we are working to provide bigger kits of 7 pads through our partnership with PadMad. What makes this partnership special is that these pads are made using Kenyan cotton by Kenyan women. This creates a beautiful cycle of women empowering women!

At RKF, we started the Sanitary Pads program when we noticed a highly skewed ratio of girls to boys sitting for KCPE exams on our trips to various schools. A study sponsored by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation found that approximately 65% of women and girls in Kenya are unable to afford sanitary pads. Other studies have shown that many girls drop out of school when they hit menarche and many miss up to 5 days of school every month. Recent local news reports have also shown a disturbing trend of sex for pads where 1 in 10 young girls are being exploited for pads.

Through our program, we aim to address these issues by making these kits readily accessible to the girls of Kisumu. We aim to reach an additional 300 girls this year, making it a total of over 550 girls under the RKF Sanitary Pads Program. We hope you will consider supporting our endeavor.

We have incredible news!! 🎉🥳 The Rahul Kotak Foundation's Project: Give Hope to Kisumu's Underprivileged Children got selected by GlobalGiving as the Project of the Month for February 2019. We are absolutely ecstatic to have received this honour!

Please read the entire report by GlobalGiving CEO, Alix Guerrier (link in bio)
If you would like to make a contribution to our project as part of the Project of the Month Club, you can do so in the link shared above. The money we receive from being selected as the Project of the Month will be used to boost the various programs we implement within schools in the slums and rural areas to achieve the following: - Serve over 250,000 meals of breakfast and lunch in the 2019 academic year to over 1,800 students in the slums and rural parts of Kisumu through RKF’s Meal Program
- Complete our current work of converting a storage room into a library that will hold 10,000 books and 50 seating units that will cater to over 1,300 children in a fishermen community
- Convert 2 shipping containers into libraries that will hold up to 5,000 books each
- Provide various learning material like exercise books, pencils, educational toys etc. to all the students we work with
- Keep all the existing WASH Programs in our schools by ensuring access to soap and running water throughout the year

Thank you 🙏🏼

To mark the end of the Academic year, we spent a fun day with the children of Elimu de Ark School jumping and screaming to celebrate the work we have done this year.
There was a bouncy castle, some hula hoops, high fives and cake to mark to the occasion!

In less than 36 hours, it will be #givingtuesday. This is a movement to create an international day of charitable giving at the beginning of the holiday season where you can help others through the gift of your time, donations, goods or your voice. What will you be doing on Tuesday?
Putting the shoes to test! 👞 Another one from the @toms one-to-one giving partnership with Cohesu.
Through our partnership with a local NGO, Cohesu (Community Health Support Program), we have been able to ensure that the students of the schools we work with receive new school shoes at least twice a year through the @toms giving One for One project. This program was introduced to combat soil transmitted diseases such as hookworms and jiggers (Tunga penetrans) amongst children in the Lake Victoria Region of Kenya. This also makes the morning walk to school a lot more comfortable and eases the financial burden on parents/guardians who may not have been able to afford a pair of school shoes for their children.

This year, the students of Soko Primary School in Nyakach received 147 new pairs of shoes as a result of this partnership; this included students starting from PP1 (age 3) all the way to Standard 8 (age 15). Another 80 pairs were received by the Students of Valley Academy.

Students in rural Kisumu’s Soko Primary School. During this year’s #givingtuesday we will be raising funds to improve the classrooms at this school and to keep their feeding program going.
SAVE THE DATE! Less than a week to go... RKF will be participating in @globalgiving’s #givingtuesday matching campaign where up to $150,000 will be up for matching.

This is the best time to make a donation! Help us reach more people by reposting and sharin our project details with friends and family members.
