On Friday, the 8th grade visited the DNA Learning Center in Cold Spring Harbor, NY.
During this annual trip, the 8th graders become genetic engineers, as they genetically program the plasmid DNA of E. coli to produce green fluorescent protein (GFP), a protein produced by jellyfish which allows them to glow. The students bring back petri dishes with their genetically engineered bacteria and a second petri dish which is their control group and we incubate their bacteria to allow it to reproduce multiple times. A day or two later, students can observe their bacteria glowing under a blacklight! #tds #trevor #trevordayeveryday #genetics #dna

Last night, Trevor hosted a special documentary screening of Straight/Curve: Redefining Body Image, a film featuring Trevor students. Director/Producer Jenny McQuaile, Oscar-winning Producer Yael Melamede, and Supermodel Emma Aronson joined two of the Trevor students featured in the film for a Q&A after. #trevordayschool #straightcurvefilm
One of Trevor's favorite rites of passage is the 5th grade's sword dance performance at the annual All-School Holiday Assembly -- this year, scheduled for December 22nd. The sword dance follows a series of coordinated, complex moves (kept top secret), with a stunning finale. Throughout their years in Lower School, students look forward to when they will be the oldest grade, which gives them the "right" to perform the sword dance. This image shows a rehearsal in 2004, when the Lower School was still on the east side. #tbt #trevordayschool #tds #trevordayeveryday #trevor #sworddance

Dr. Natalka Freeland is joining Trevor as an upper school English teacher and advisor. She has taught at San Francisco University High School and most recently at Columbia University, The New School and University of California Irvine. Dr. Freeland received her undergraduate degree at Harvard University and her Master of Philosophy and PhD from Yale University. She answered a few questions to better introduce herself to the Trevor community!
Q: What’s your favorite book?
A: This is a tough one! Usually, whatever I'm reading at the moment. But for overall favorite, it's a tie between Milton's “Paradise Lost” and Dickens's “Bleak House”. Q: What super power would you choose?
A: I'd like to be able to stop time for everyone except me (and maybe a carefully selected fellow-traveler or two). Q: What’s your favorite movie?
A: I like a lot of movies, but I'm ultimately more into long-form narratives-- 800-page novels or TV series. I loved The Wire, I'm also a big fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which always perched precariously between seriousness and sarcasm. As a secret (oops!) sci-fi nerd, I think the first few episodes of Battlestar Gallactica are genius.
Q: What do you like to do for fun? A: I grew up near the Canadian Rockies, and I love to go hiking there in the summer. Closer to home, I like all kinds of games, especially ones that aren't too serious to allow for conversation.
Q: What’s your favorite pizza topping?
A: Kale, proscuitto and parmesan, on my homemade crust.
Q: What do you like most about Trevor so far?
A: I'm really amazed by the culture of kindness-- the students treat each other with real respect and compassion. #trevordayschool #trevor #trevordayeveryday #tds #faculty #newdragons
Tuesday night, 700 Trevor students, parents, faculty, and staff attended the All-School Annual Skating Party, held at the Wollman Rink in Central Park. Skating in a balmy 50+ degrees was a far cry from prior skating parties, which were often held in February or March. In 2008, heavy snow fell throughout the evening, all but obscuring the ice. #tbt #trevor #tds #trevordayschool #wollmanrink #trevordayeveryday #skating
Beautiful night at Wollman Rink. Skate on Trevor! #trevordayschool #trevordayeveryday #centralpark
Trevor's All School Skating Event is tomorrow night at Wollman Rink from.6-9pm. You can buy your tickets at the door! We hope to see you there!
Today, Trevor welcomed White House Correspondent and political analyst for CNN, Maggie Haberman. Ms. Haberman spoke about her experiences with journalism, specifically in the White House, but spent most of her time answering questions from the students. #tds #trevordayschool #maggiehaberman #whitehousecorrespondents #nycschools #cnn
Did you know that Middle School Teacher Mrs. Monteleone is part of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade? This year she was a balloon handler on the Spongebob Squarepants Balloon, and she even ran into Trevor Student Carrie B., who is also a parade participant! Happy Thanksgiving, and thank you both for being a part of a New York City tradition that brings so much happiness to so many people! #trevordayschool #tds #thanksgiving #parade #spongebob #nycschools
Trevor's Lower School mascot Sunny was given exclusive, behind-the-scenes access to the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade! He got to sit on some of the floats and vehicles before the parade started, and meet some new friends. Happy Thanksgiving from Sunny, and everyone at Trevor! #trevordayschool #tds #nycschools #dragons #thanksgiving
