#9DaysOfGiving
.
Helping someone prepare a meal is more than just a nice thing to do - for many in our community, it can be a lifeline.
.
Kick off DAY 1 of #9DaysOfGiving by donating or giving your time to help people in our community, like Elsie.
.
For almost two decades, Elsie volunteered with Community Care, a United Way funded agency. After suffering a fall, she found herself in need of the very support she had been providing for so many. With the help of volunteers, Community Care is helping Elsie get back on her feet with nutritional meals, check-ins, and social visits. You can read her full story in our bio.
.
On Monday we are starting our #countdown to #GivingTuesdayCA with daily #actsofkindness! Make sure you follow us to find out the act of kindness for the day!

#UNIGNORABLE - Food Insecurity
.
Since 2009, the cost of feeding a family of 4 in Durham has risen from $703 to $853 per month. Today, roughly 78,000 people in Durham Region are without reliable access to healthy food - that’s 12% of all households.
.
Chronic food insecurity can have devastating effects on a person’s physical and mental health. For example, food-insecure adults are more vulnerable to chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and depression.
.
#ThanksToYou and our funded agencies, the United Way Durham Region was able to help 16,000 access food banks, community gardens, and nutritious food preparation programs.
.
Donate today, and let’s make sure that everyone in our community has enough to eat on #WorldFoodDay and every other day of the year.

“In my teen years, I began to deal with depression and addiction issues which have plagued me for the rest of my life. Then things went from bad to worse; I dropped out of high school and got deeper into drugs. In my early twenties, I had a tragic mountain bike accident that left me with epilepsy and ever worsening mental health issues. I began to have trouble holding a job, keeping a relationship and, after 20 years, I lost the one thing I took for granted - my housing. For two years, I lived on the streets and was caught in a revolving door of drug use, depression, and hospitalization.” “One day, after living in an abandoned house for over three months, I checked back into Cornerstone. This is when I became a part of the Housing First Program. I was connected with a transitional room at Cornersone and an outreach worker assisted me in daily living. They gave me all of the support I needed to break the cycle of homelessness and addiction.”
