The Yale School of Art is pleased to announce that an anonymous gift of $750,000 from a Yale University alumnus will establish a new Art and Social Justice initiative at the School. The Art and Social Justice initiative has been created by Marta Kuzma, Stavros Niarchos Foundation Dean of the Yale School of Art, recognizing that graduate art education needs to explore the intersections of art through economic, social, and cultural perspectives. The school-wide initiative will contribute to scholarships, promote research, extend pedagogical offerings, and explore practical approaches and projects that foster critical and collective consciousness around social engagement and civic dialogue. ~

This afternoon we celebrate the extraordinary life of Richard "Chip" Benson (1943–2017). Jock Reynolds, the Henry J. Heinz II Director of the Gallery, and Marta Kuzma, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Dean of @yaleschoolofart, have invited distinguished speakers to offer remembrances of and tributes to Benson—Dean Emeritus of the Yale University School of Art, renowned photographer and beloved teacher, mentor, colleague, and friend. The memorial service begins at 1:00pm in the Gallery Lecture Hall. A reception follows. Doors to the lecture hall open at 12:00pm.
A broad array of Benson's photographs and book projects are on view throughout the museum, including a special installation in the Gallery lobby. In this image (at left) are four portraits of Richard Benson taken by his longtime friend, the inimitable Lee Friedlander. In the center are four Polaroid prints of Richard and his wife Barbara, by Walker Evans. And at right is a portrait of Benson by Phillip Periman. All are welcome to learn more about Benson's artistic and personal legacy.

The Gallery is open Saturday and Sunday 11–5. #freeandopentothepublic
